CRIME NEWS

  • Residents may receive text messages that claim they owe an unpaid toll bill but these texts are scams—not sent by the Alabama Department of Transportation. The Better Business Bureau advises that if a toll is unpaid, a mail notice will come and any suspicious messages should be reported.  6 WBRC News
  • A jury convicted Demarcus Chandler of capital murder for hiring Solomon Minatee III in the murder-for-hire killing of his girlfriend Raven Swain on July 28, 2020—and he was sentenced to death on April 15.  6 WBRC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The BJCC in Birmingham has attracted top entertainers including Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown after a $175 million renovation upgraded the Legacy Arena in 2021. The venue will host future events such as a Lil Wayne concert on May 3 and a Four Legends show on May 17.  The Birmingham Times
  • Today, WVTM 13 airs Project CommUNITY: Letter from a Birmingham jail, a segment that looks at Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 letter written while he was jailed and shows how it sparked a major push for civil rights.   • Xavier Golden, a UAB computer science student from Eclectic, will graduate with honors on May 3 and begin a full-time role as a software engineer at Microsoft in Seattle.   • The Coca-Cola Amphitheater at the BJCC is more than 82% complete and is set to open on June 22; final work on key amenities like the box office, concessions and restrooms will finish by the end of this month—BJCC is ensuring parking and infrastructure are ready for the public.  ABC 33/40

  • The Birmingham-based Lakeshore Lakers won their third NWBA national championship earlier this month by defeating the Brooks Bullsharks 60-52 at the Henrico Sports & Event Center in Richmond—ending a one-loss regular season.
