COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday afternoon, Shelby Humane hosted its sixth annual 'Twas the Night Before Christmas event where shelter dogs enjoyed a meal of ground turkey, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes and a cookie while Santa brought blankets, chew toys and pig ears donated by the community and students organized the event.  CBS 42
  • Today, the Lovelady Center bought a 56-unit apartment complex in East Lake + named it Brenda’s Courtyard in honor of its founder to support its NextStep aftercare program that will eventually provide up to 112 homes for graduates.  AL.com
  • Three graduates from the Jimmie Hale Mission's recovery programs received donated vehicles at a title signing ceremony Tuesday in Birmingham. The cars were a Nissan Rogue, a Hyundai Genesis, and a Nissan Pathfinder, gifted by Driving Hope & a local donor to support their fresh start.  CBS 42
  • Hibbett and PUMA donated $20,000 along with 1,000 apparel items, 1,000 fidget toys, and 16 Paw Patrol toys to Children's of Alabama last week to support families at the hospital. This holiday donation is the sixth consecutive contribution and will aid several hospital programs.  6 WBRC News
  • The Jimmie Hale Mission has given three cars to graduates of its recovery and housing programs to support their journey toward independence as recipients now work, attend school, and build stable lives. The nonprofit will host a special Christmas meal today (serving 750 meals and delivering 300 to homebound seniors).  WVTM 13

  • High Dive Listening Lounge will open at Lakeview Marina early next year to offer music lovers an immersive venue with curated sound and a Chef Sean Brock-designed menu. The venue will debut with a New Year's Eve Party (12/31) featuring live music and a midnight toast.  Bham Now
  • The Homewood High School Patriot Band will march in its sixth Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1 at 8AM in Pasadena, California + fans can also view the Rose Bowl kickoff at 3PM online.  Bham Now
  • Birmingham offers 11 vibrant New Year’s Eve events on Wed, Dec. 31, with family-friendly celebrations at the Birmingham Zoo and McWane Science Center and live music parties at Tin Roof, Redmont Hotel, and more (venue choices vary by theme). EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Alabama schools were chosen among 500 teams nationwide for Samsung’s 16th Annual Solve For Tomorrow STEM Competition. Jackson-Olin, South Hampton, and Hoover students will use $10,000 in Samsung products for local projects that restore Village Creek, improve tornado warnings, and boost mobility, with mentor-guided pitches set for February.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hueytown resident Jace Watkins, 11, was hospitalized on Dec. 20 at Children's of Alabama after suffering a flu-related seizure and now remains on a ventilator while his family gathers to pray for his recovery; state health officials report a seasonal surge in flu cases.  AL.com
  • Blood centers report lower donations as families travel and schools close for the holiday season—donation drives drop while the need to save lives continues. LifeSouth Community Blood Centers and the American Red Cross stress that every donation, which can save up to three lives, is needed to avoid treatment delays.  CBS 42
  • Birmingham Fitness Center North reopened today after $50,000 contributions from local councilors and ARPA funds funded renovations. Located at 421 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd (across from Parker High), the center now features modern exercise equipment and updated facilities to boost community health.  Bham Now
  • Two families celebrated a medical milestone when surgeons at UAB Hospital and Children's of Alabama split a donor liver — one half for a pediatric patient and the other for an adult at UAB on Dec. 24. The breakthrough is expected to reduce wait times for liver transplants.  WVTM 13
