  • Families in Birmingham who lost loved ones to gun violence gathered Saturday morning for a support event, receiving gifts + meals during their first holiday without those they missed.   • Downtown Birmingham hosts Birminghamhenge today through Dec. 28 as the winter solstice light hits the historic street grid around 4:30 p.m., causing temporary slowdowns on 5th Avenue North (photographers call it a must-see event).  Bham Now

  • Innovate Alabama hosted State of Innovation Day 2025 at Regions Field in Birmingham on Tuesday—gathering business, research and innovation leaders who outlined how a statewide strategy is driving job creation, private investment and economic growth, and recognized local innovators with awards.  Yellowhammer News
  • Drivers in Birmingham can expect lower gas prices this holiday season as Alabama's average drops to $2.62 per gallon—a $0.10 decrease from last year. AAA (the local fuel expert) advises shoppers to compare prices since the national average is $2.86 and supply has improved.  6 WBRC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alabama’s oyster season (54-day harvest since Oct. 6) will close at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23 on public waters. Officials say environmental stressors may reduce oyster numbers next year as the season yields 425,000 pounds of oysters.  Yellowhammer News

  • Mayor Randall Woodfin and his wife Kendra welcomed their second daughter, Joy Charity-Faye Woodfin, Saturday morning; Joy’s double middle name honors her maternal great-grandmother and grandmother—a tribute to the family legacy they cherish.  AL.com

  • At Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (a busy hub), holiday travelers experienced smooth screening although some encountered scheduling and baggage issues as families and frequent flyers adjusted to the seasonal rush. AAA projections showed over 8 million flyers for Christmas as flight tickets rose 7%.  CBS 42

  • Former WBRC sports reporter Christina Chambers died in Hoover, shaking up the local sports community as she covered school and college athletics.
