COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Birmingham is investing $850K to open a new Carver Jones grocery store at Heritage Towne Center to fight food insecurity in a local food desert. The store will open in late March or early April and will offer a pharmacy & fresh meat cutting while hiring local workers.  WVTM 13
  • After Sunday service, Sixth Avenue Baptist Church held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to mark the expansion of its historic campus in Birmingham. The special event brought longtime members together & underscored the church's commitment to community growth.  WVTM 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Islamic Academy of Alabama cancelled its plans to relocate and will stay at its current campus (after reviewing community needs and planning updates).  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB researchers were awarded a $2.8 million grant to send human brain tissue models to space (using cerebral organoids) in a study aimed at unlocking insights into Alzheimer’s disease. The experiment used specialized hardware on the International Space Station for a 30-day run before samples were returned for analysis.  Yellowhammer News
  • Washington will vote this week on a three-year extension of ACA tax credits that help Alabama hospitals cope with funding challenges; if the credits expire at the end of 2025, 100,000 residents may lose coverage & emergency room wait times may increase.  6 WBRC News

  • After a SEC Championship loss to Georgia, head coach Kalen DeBoer told his team to get back to work as they prepare to face Oklahoma on December 19 at 7 p.m. in Norman.  6 WBRC News
  • The Negro Southern League Museum, with Commissioner Sheila Tyson, will honor local baseball star Oscar 'Butler' Williams on Tuesday, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. outside the Jefferson County Commission Chambers (a Miles College Athletic Hall of Fame member) as the city celebrates his 50-year legacy in its Industrial League.  The Birmingham Times
  • Georgia Southern and Appalachian State will play in the 2025 JLab Birmingham Bowl at Protective Stadium on Monday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. App State finished 5-7 + was invited after several 6-win teams declined, giving its seniors an extra postseason chance.  6 WBRC News
  • Jacksonville State, with an 8-5 record under coach Charles Kelly, will face longtime rival Troy in the Salute to Veterans Bowl at 8 p.m. Dec. 16 at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl—marking their 64th matchup since 2001.  WVTM 13
