COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City and community leaders met Monday at Regions Field to discuss reducing chronic homelessness and homeless encampments by offering preventive services and new housing options. The City Council approved a $1.5 million investment to support these efforts.  6 WBRC News
  • Festive excitement awaits Birmingham this weekend (Dec. 5-7) with 21 local events including Vulcan’s Holidays on the Mountain at Vulcan Park and Museum, holiday performances at Red Mountain Theatre and family activities at McWane, all offering varied fun and festive traditions.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Bessemer City Middle School won a national coding championship after a competitive contest, showcasing strong coding skills and teamwork. The win reinforces the school’s growing focus on technology and prepares students for future challenges.  6 WBRC News
  • Devon Manigault, a former defensive lineman and top civil engineering student, will graduate from UAB on Dec. 13 after earning high honors and a 4.0 GPA. HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from UAB and the University of Maryland discovered that a gene called zmpB in pneumonia bacteria is tied to heart damage, showing that patients who get this infection may be at greater risk. The study, published Nov. 20 in (Cell Reports), suggests that targeting the enzyme could guide treatment decisions.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Health officials in Mountain Brook urge residents to get vaccinated against a new H3N2 strain that has raised emergency room visits by 30 percent. Becky Sorrell of Ritch’s Pharmacy said shared air at gatherings may spread the flu — covering coughs and staying home when ill remains key.  WVTM 13
  • UAB School of Optometry is offering the Gift of Sight event at Jefferson County Western Health Center to uninsured individuals, providing free comprehensive eye exams and same-day glasses (a mobile unit cuts lenses on site) and the program ends today.  WVTM 13
  • In November, 45 local restaurants including Surin West, Otey’s and Joyland earned scores of 95 or above during routine health inspections; these high marks show strong food safety standards + care in our community.  Bham Now

  • Alabamians are advised to winterize their vehicles ahead of possible snow and ice. AAA expert Clay Ingram recommends checking tire tread with a penny test—if Lincoln’s head shows, then new tires are needed—and preparing an emergency kit with essentials for safe driving.  WVTM 13

  • The Shoppes at Chelsea is an upcoming shopping center off U.S. Highway 280 in Chelsea that will feature Target as its anchor tenant. The Chelsea City Council approved a $15 million incentive package on Tuesday, Dec. 2 and Mayor Cody Sumners said the project could open by late 2027 (early 2028).  Bham Now

  • Maplesville capped its unbeaten season with a 42-22 win over Wadley in the 1A championship game at Protective Stadium last Thursday. Coach Brad Abbott led the team to its fifth state title (avenging last year’s loss) as the victory cemented their season record.  ABC 33/40
  • Moody Blue Devils won their first state football championship after defeating Vigor at Protective Stadium on Thursday night. It was only their second Super 7 game appearance and a milestone for the local community.  ABC 33/40
