- ➤ Larry James, a missing boater whose body was recovered on Nov. 21 in Hale County, was honored at a funeral service held Saturday at More Than Conquerors Faith Church on Dennison Avenue SW—Birmingham, where the Black Contractors Association presented a proclamation in his memory. - ➤ Nick Pihakis started Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q from a small pizza parlor on Clairmont Avenue in 1985 and built it into a regional restaurant empire with 52 locations in six states. In 2014 he launched the Pihakis Restaurant Group and will open Valley Post in Chelsea later this year — a six-acre complex that brings four restaurant brands together. AL.com
- ➤ A new Milo's restaurant will open in Fairfield on Dec. 6 at Aaron Aronov Drive. The restaurant will host a Fairfield Family Day on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — it will feature family-friendly activities including a bounce house as part of the chain's long legacy. ABC 33/40
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Maplesville School will dismiss all students early at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 4 so families can support the football team in their state championship game — the team, which secured its spot with a 59-18 win over the Leroy Bears, will face Wadley High at 3 p.m. at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. - ➤ Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin visited John Herbert Phillips Academy for a parent-student luncheon in late November and stressed that Birmingham City Schools must be the first choice for families.
