ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Birmingham firefighters are battling a large house fire on Monday morning.  ABC 33/40
  • Staff at Skyline Village retirement home are asking for community donations to help cook meals for about 90 displaced residents after a weekend fire left the facility without power—this aid includes requests to local restaurants and churches—and the home has arranged hotel rooms as cleanup efforts continue.  6 WBRC News

  • Birmingham now offers many ways to learn and play mahjong through classes, meetups, and clubs held at O’Neal Library, Magic City Mahj, Bird Bam Besties, the 205 Mahjong Club, House of Mahj, and by The Marvelous Mrs. Mazer—each event varies in schedule and cost—so players of all levels can join in.   • Legendary Weird Al Yankovic will perform at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater in Birmingham on Oct. 2 as part of his Bigger and Weirder Tour; tickets go on sale on Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. The tour will begin on May 26 in Hollywood, Florida and will visit 90 cities before the year ends.  6 WBRC News
  • Coca-Cola will bring its Holiday Caravan to Birmingham from Nov. 19 to Nov. 23 with stops at Lowe’s, Walmart, Piggly Wiggly, McDonald’s and the Birmingham Zoo—offering festive activities, photos with Santa and a Coca-Cola Gifting Box for holiday cheer—before it heads to south Alabama.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers in Birmingham paid a little more this week as average gasoline prices rose 5.4 cents to $2.70 per gallon according to GasBuddy's survey of 550 stations. Prices remain lower than last month and vary widely across stations—ranging from $2.44 to $2.99 per gallon.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four Birmingham schools placed in the state's top 10 for STEM in the new Niche rankings—Indian Springs is second, Mountain Brook is fifth, Altamont is eighth, and Alabama School of Fine Arts is tenth. The report used test scores, student and parent feedback, and class enrollment in math and science.  Bham Now

  • ALDOT is finishing road work on US 280 to improve travel conditions — local drivers should be aware that traffic may be affected as the project wraps up.  6 WBRC News
  • Drivers in downtown Birmingham must exercise caution as westbound lanes on University Boulevard between 16th and 14th Street remain closed until November 30 due to construction at UAB's new Biomedical Research and Psychology building—officials advise following detour signs.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Children’s of Alabama warns that injury is the leading cause of death for children over one—especially with rising firearm injuries, unintentional ingestions, and ATV accidents as the holiday season nears. Pediatrician Dr. Elizabeth Hendrickson urged caregivers to store firearms securely, lock medications away, and ensure children under 16 never operate ATVs without proper safety gear to help prevent harm.  CBS 42
  • The Alabama Genomic Health Initiative has given genetic tests to over 10,000 Alabamians in all 67 counties to help catch health problems early. The program—led by UAB and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology—offers personal genetic results that can guide doctors in choosing treatments.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2026 inductees who will be honored on May 9 at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel's Ballroom. A statewide committee selected eight inductees (including Jeff Brantley and Tommy Tuberville) with votes counted by PricewaterhouseCoopers.  ABC 33/40
  • The Iron Bowl will start under lights at 6:30 p.m. CST at Jordan-Hare Stadium, marking the first prime time kickoff since 2014. Alabama must win to reach the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff after its loss to Oklahoma—Auburn aims for its first win since 2019.  Yellowhammer News
