- ➤ The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will host a Thanksgiving turkey giveaway at 1 p.m. today at Union Hill Baptist Church, 7049 Taylors Ferry Rd in Bessemer — the event aims to help families enjoy a special Thanksgiving meal. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Eric Crockett of Crockett Moving Services is donating his services today to collect and sort relief items for Hurricane Melissa—local groups such as Grace Klein and Christian Foundation Academy have set up collection points. The items will be sent from Baton Rouge to Jamaica via the Cajun Navy on Nov. 18. ABC 33/40

- ➤ Homewood Fire Department responded to a fire at Skyline Village Retirement Home Saturday night—sprinklers held the flames while crews sheltered residents in place and later helped them descend flooded stairwells. ABC 33/40

- ➤ U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided Nori Thai and Sushi on Nov 14 (4704 Cahaba River Rd), detaining many employees and leaving the restaurant's dining room closed as it navigates next steps. AL.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Hoover High School graduate Rotimi Kukoyi, now at UNC-Chapel Hill, was named one of 32 American Rhodes Scholars on Saturday — chosen from 965 candidates — and he will start his Oxford studies in October to pursue dual master's programs in health fields. The Birmingham Times

- ➤ Calera fire marshal is offering free smoke detector installations and inspections—part of the Get Alarmed, Alabama! initiative to boost fire safety for local residents. CBS 42
- ➤ New rules for SNAP were set by Congress in the One Big Beautiful Bill and will require most able-bodied adults to show work proof for continued benefits—states began applying these changes on Nov. 1. Alabama residents who missed regular SNAP payments during the shutdown received them on Nov. 14, but many may soon face reduced benefits if they do not meet the new conditions. AL.com
- ➤ A lane on University Boulevard between 16th Street South and 14th Street South will close for two weeks from Sunday through Nov. 30 — the closure is for construction of UAB’s new Biomedical Research and Psychology Building. Drivers are advised to follow signage and use caution in the area. CBS 42
- ➤ All lanes of US-280 at Pumphouse Road reopened today as contractors installed three massive girders more than 12 hours ahead of schedule to ease congestion. The eastbound lanes closed Friday at 7 p.m. and the westbound lanes closed nightly from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. — ALDOT thanked drivers for their patience. ABC 33/40

- ➤ Mackenzie Cotton, a Corner High School softball player, suffered two serious knee injuries — one in April 2024 and another in July — but she is now recovering from her second surgery and credits her faith for giving her strength.
