COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Birmingham City Councilors Wardine Alexander and LaTonya Tate held two food donation drives Saturday to support families during Thanksgiving—Alexander, with the Serious Injury Law Group, distributed 550 hens at First Baptist Church in Roosevelt City from 10:00 a.m. to noon while Tate partnered with UAB Mobile Market to hand out food boxes at North Birmingham Towers from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  ABC 33/40
  • Families in Jefferson County received food on Saturday to help them celebrate Thanksgiving, including nearly 2,000 turkeys and meal supplies — local groups served around 400 families to support those in need.  6 WBRC News
  • The Birmingham Police Department has kicked off its annual toy drive where residents can drop off new, unwrapped toys at Police Headquarters and precincts—South, North, East and West—through Dec. 17 to help bring holiday cheer to local children.  ABC 33/40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Homewood Fire and police investigated a fire that broke out Saturday evening on the third floor of Skyline Village retirement home at the 200 block of Goodwin Crest Drive—firefighters put out the blaze while working to clear smoke and rescue those inside.  6 WBRC News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Truly Cares Home Services celebrated its fifth anniversary Saturday evening at Alcove Birmingham — the home care service launched a partnership with Black Bird Smart Innovations to debut its wearable safety technology in Alabama. The company said it is not the exclusive distributor of the technology.  CBS 42
  • Shaami Mediterranean Grill has opened at 2651 Pelham Pkwy replacing the longtime Sarris Cafe which closed earlier this year after 20 years in service—its menu features lamb shanks, shawarma, kebabs and baba ghanoush. Local diners now have a new spot to enjoy Mediterranean dishes—dining began on Nov. 6.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today the Birmingham Zoo unveiled Flamboyant Flamingo, a seven-foot-tall bronze sculpture weighing 800 pounds created by local artist Nelson Grice. It is now on display near the zoo's flamingo exhibit and marks a special addition during the zoo's 70th birthday celebration.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chelsea schools earned an A rating on the Alabama State Report Card for strong academic performance, growth and low absenteeism—specifically, Chelsea High, Chelsea Middle, Chelsea Park Elementary and Forest Oaks Elementary. Trussville City Schools also celebrated their third consecutive A rating with individual scores of 99 at Cahaba Elementary, 98 at Magnolia Elementary, 99 at Paine Elementary, 92 at Hewitt-Trussville Middle and 96 at Hewitt-Trussville High.  ABC 33/40

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A proposed Bessemer data center faces new hurdles as research shows the Birmingham darter lives in Little Blue Creek and an environmental group has filed a petition to list it as endangered+ ALDOT also said the current plans conflict with the Northern Beltline, and city council will vote on final approval Tuesday at 9 a.m.  WBHM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Water service in Mountain Brook is restored ahead of schedule — crews replaced three valves along Highway 280 eastbound, affecting 55 service connections. Residents are advised to flush their taps by running cold water for five minutes if they notice air or brown water and to call Central Alabama Water with any questions.  ABC 33/40
  • Bessemer police are urging residents to donate coats until Nov. 18 at their headquarters at 23 15th Street North—last year they gave over 180 coats to local families and hope to match or exceed that this year.  ABC 33/40
