- ➤ The Humane Society of West Alabama will host Pet Portraits with Santa to raise funds for animal care when professional photographer Keith Davis takes pet portraits at Pet Supplies Plus on December 2 at 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., December 4 at 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. and December 6 at 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.—each session costs $20 with all proceeds benefiting the Humane Society. - ➤ Onelife Fitness will open its new large gym in early December at 4835 Promenade Parkway, offering group classes, personal training, and recovery help such as HydroMassage and red-light therapy—built for everyone. - ➤ The Alabama Symphony Orchestra will hold a series of holiday concerts in Birmingham in December—Holiday POPS! for Kids and Families is on Dec. 2 at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, The Muppet Christmas Carol live in concert is on Dec. 7 at BJCC, Handel’s Messiah is on Dec. 19 and Dec. 20 at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, and the Viennese New Year celebration is on Dec. 31 at the same venue. - ➤ Alabama Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair said rural counties have received $7 billion in capital investment and nearly 9,000 jobs since 2020. A report presented on November 5 showed 57 projects added $1.2 billion in investment and more than 1,600 jobs while supporting growth in sectors like automotive, aerospace, advanced materials, forest products, and food production (highlighting a new phase of local economic progress). - ➤ Fairfield High Preparatory School improved its state report card grade from a D to a C and new principal Tamika Harton meets weekly with teachers to support students—especially in reading and math. - ➤ Residents captured a dazzling display of Northern Lights Tuesday night as strong solar activity lit up the skies away from downtown—photographs from Springville, McCalla and Homewood showed the vivid phenomenon while meteorologists had predicted the lights would appear again on November 12 if the skies remained clear. - ➤ Crews will close all lanes at Pumphouse Road on Highway 280 starting Friday night at 11 p.m.—westbound lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. daily while eastbound lanes remain closed until Monday at 6 a.m. Drivers will use detours via Lakeshore Parkway, I-65 and I-459 as the widening project sets girders for a new bridge to ease heavy traffic. 6 WBRC News

- ➤ UAB researchers identified six cases of chronic granulomatous fungal sinusitis linked to the emerging pathogen Curvularia in the humid Southeastern US. The study found healthy African American men experienced persistent nasal congestion & facial pain that may require endoscopic surgery or long-term antifungal treatment.
