COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Birmingham held its 78th annual Veterans Day Parade yesterday in downtown, where crowds enjoyed marching bands, military vehicles, and a tribute from Hank the Tank— a retired military working horse walking without a rider to honor fallen heroes. The parade, which began in 1947 by veteran Raymond Weeks to honor all who served, showcased the city's longstanding tradition of remembrance.  Yellowhammer News
  • Yesterday, thousands gathered in Birmingham for Veterans Day as the Kelly Ingram VFW Post hosted free food and fellowship for veterans — a tribute that veterans like Clarence Fairer III and Marine veteran Butch Tumlin said honored the real sacrifices made for freedom.  WVTM 13

  • The National Veterans Day Parade rolled through downtown Birmingham on November 11, 2025. It started on 18th Street and 9th Avenue North, went down 4th Avenue, and looped back to 19th Street and 10th Avenue North—featuring armed services members and marching bands.  WVTM 13
  • Federal worker Pamela Ward said employee frustrations grew during the 42-day government shutdown as workers went two pay periods without a paycheck—despite a Senate funding measure passed November 11 aimed at reopening the government. MyFEDBenefits launched an assistance map to help federal employees find free meals and essential resources until an agreement is reached.  6 WBRC News
  • Today, Birmingham unveiled a new logo for the 2027 Medal of Honor Society Convention, which will be held in The Magic City from September 13 to 18 and feature community events and youth programs. The design by local artist Shawn Wright was shown at the Veterans Day Parade — marking the 80th anniversary of the first parade — and reflects the city's heritage as the birthplace of Veterans Day.  Bham Now
  • Birmingham City Council members have organized free food box events that will run over the next week to help more than 23,000 households facing SNAP cuts from the federal government shutdown. The food boxes are meant to support families as Thanksgiving nears.  AL.com
  • Senior citizens in Birmingham can apply for two-bedroom units at a $42M affordable facility in Southtown when the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District opens its voucher program waiting list Nov. 18 through Nov. 21 with an 8:00 a.m. deadline. The program gives rental help tied to each unit—ensuring a safe, affordable home for residents aged 62 and older.  The Birmingham Times
