COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KultureCity is turning Birmingham’s old Powell Steam Plant—built in 1895—into a new center for accessibility that will house a technical college, exhibit space and a park for all ages. The project will give people with disabilities new skills and job links while celebrating our local history and inclusion.  AL.com
  • This weekend, Madison Johnson opened a community pantry (the Planted Pantry) in Avondale outside House Plant Collective to offer free food, gloves, and blankets as SNAP benefits stalled due to a government shutdown. Johnson said the response has been strong and neighbors are welcome to drop off donations or contribute monetarily.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham will host the nation’s oldest Veterans Day parade on Nov. 11 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. through downtown as Medal of Honor winner Mike Rose leads the event—retired military horse Hank the Tank will return as the riderless Cap Horse honoring fallen veterans.  AL.com
  • Regions Bank helps veterans and active duty military by offering money advice and special job programs while working with local groups to give extra help. The bank has a dedicated manager—Steve Beres—who makes sure veterans get the support they need.  Yellowhammer News
  • On Sunday, the Jimmie Hale Mission opened its first warming station of the season to offer warm meals, clean blankets, and cold weather gear to neighbors without heat—as the station will remain open through Monday evening to help keep everyone safe in dropping temperatures.  CBS 42

  • Three former Winn-Dixie stores in the Birmingham area reopened as Food City locations last week—one in Jasper, one in Trussville, and one in Fultondale—as the new operator said it would invest in the sites and keep most employees. Two remaining Winn-Dixie stores in Birmingham may close at the end of the year if they are not purchased.  Bham Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mountain Brook installed a new pollinator garden at Brookwood Forest Elementary on Saturday—about 100 plants with over a dozen native species were added to help teach students and teachers about nature. Mayor Graham Smith said the project will serve as a model for similar gardens at other schools.  WVTM 13

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • More families in Birmingham are using food pantries and cutting back on spending due to concerns over SNAP benefits and paycheck delays. Local food blogger Andrea Mathis shared a recipe that uses common ingredients to make a balanced meal for four under $10 — it uses sausage, potatoes, and peppers — and provides practical tips to help stretch grocery dollars.  6 WBRC News
