COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On November 8, UAB Veterans Services hosted the third annual Veterans Day 5K at Railroad Park that raised over $20,000 to support student veterans and their dependents. More than 1,100 participants joined the race, which ran through Birmingham’s Health District — with funds set to cover housing, books, and emergency needs.  ABC 33/40
  • United Ability in Birmingham hosted Emmett's Toy Takeover, a workshop where volunteers learned to switch-adapt costly toys so children with disabilities can play independently. The event — funded by Emmett Connors’ family and inspired by his work with early learning programs — made adapted toys more affordable for families in need.  ABC 33/40
  • Volunteers from Birmingham's Sleep In Heavenly Peace and local groups built 50 beds for children in need to help improve sleep and well-being—supporting a long wait list from local agencies amid ongoing government shutdown and food insecurity fears.  WVTM 13
  • Church of the Highlands will hold a land dedication service at 10 a.m. today in Daphne—marking its $4.6 million purchase of 27 acres for a new campus. The 50,000 square foot campus will open in 2026—serving as a hub for the church’s coastal activities.  AL.com
  • Central Alabama Caribbean American Organization is hosting a relief fundraiser to help those affected by Hurricane Melissa—donations for essential items will be collected through drop-off until Saturday, Nov. 15.  6 WBRC News
  • City officials in Hoover have organized an aid program to help Hurricane Melissa victims—volunteers and local agencies will team up to deliver food, shelter, and emergency resources over the coming days.  6 WBRC News
  • Warming stations are now open in Birmingham to help residents stay safe in cold weather — officials say several sites will offer heated shelter as temperatures drop further. The Salvation Army leads the effort to ensure those in need have a warm place to go.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alabama Power has kept electric bills high and earned record profits by using a system that rarely challenges its spending—its regulator has not held formal hearings since 1982. Many residents struggle with expensive bills and turn to high-interest credit cards to pay for power—this setup leaves consumers with some of the nation's highest energy costs.  WBHM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bessemer City Middle School introduced therapy dogs on Friday to help students cope with stress and trauma—teachers say the dogs bring comfort to students, especially those grieving the loss of a seventh-grader to gun violence.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hoover held its annual 'A Salute to Service' event on Nov. 7 at the Finley Center to honor veterans and recognize city employees who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and the program honored five veteran Freedom Award nominees—more events are planned in November during National Veterans and Military Families month.  6 WBRC News
  • Governor Ivey has proclaimed Veterans Week from November 5–11 to honor more than 400,000 veterans and mark their service during the nation’s 250th anniversary of freedom. State officials and local groups will hold ceremonies as part of the build-up to Veterans Day on November 11.  Yellowhammer News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in Birmingham and Huntsville are expanding CPR training to boost survival rates, which are below the state average according to the American Heart Association (AHA). The task force led by UAB's Dr. Ryan Coute plans to train more residents (at least two per household) to improve emergency response times.  Yellowhammer News

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 4 Alabama beat LSU 20-9 on Saturday to extend its season win streak to eight and its home win streak to 17. The Tide forced three fumbles and recorded two sacks — key plays that sealed the win as they prepare to host Oklahoma next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ABC.  1819 News
  • No. 4 Alabama will host LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on ABC in the 90th meeting between the teams — Alabama leads the series 57-27-5 and will use its strong run game and home field to counter LSU's changes.  1819 News
  • No. 4 Alabama beat LSU 20-9 in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night—strong defense kept the Tigers from scoring a touchdown and extended Alabama’s home win streak to 17 while LSU played its first game under new interim coach Frank Wilson after Brian Kelly’s firing.  WVTM 13
