COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Support Committee for the Alabama National Cemetery is asking for volunteers—this group will place about 12,000 flags on veteran graves. Families will begin flag placement at Committal Shelter 3 on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m.—additional volunteers will help remove the flags on Nov. 14 at 10 a.m.  6 WBRC News
  • Fifteen-year-old Ethan Hill—founder of Ethan's Heart—saw his work stall when a tree crashed onto his trailer and his truck broke down, halting his plan to help those without homes. He is asking the community to repair his trailer and join his seventh Annual Bags4Blessings event on Dec. 5 at Don Hawkins Recreation Center.  The Birmingham Times
  • Today, the Justincredible Grill food truck in Concord is offering free meals to SNAP recipients and government employees affected by the shutdown at Concord Craft Fair. Recipients must show their SNAP card to receive either two OG hotdogs with a bag of chips or a chicken nugget meal for kids—donations are accepted via Facebook.  WVTM 13

  • Moxi announced a new childcare solution for parents that will offer flexible scheduling and local support. The service will be available soon to help families balance work and home responsibilities.  6 WBRC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • WBHM will launch its new radio station—The Hub—on November 14th, focusing on arts, culture and local voices. Listeners can tune in on 106.1 FM, 90.3 HD2 or via WBHM’s free app to enjoy fresh local programming that offers a break from news cycles.  Bham Now
  • On November 5, local media professionals gathered at Trim Tab Brewing for AAF Birmingham’s annual Ten Awards, where 13 winners were honored for their talent and leadership (including DeeDee Mathis earning the Ann Halpern Service Award).  Bham Now
  • Theatre UAB will present A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder from November 12th—16th, a dark comedy about Monty Navarro's rushed plan to claim an earldom.   • Birmingham is growing its arts and entertainment scene with new investments in venues like Legacy Arena—strengthening collaboration among local groups to boost hotel bookings and attract more major acts. City leaders say these efforts will expand options for big-name events in the Magic City.  CBS 42

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lovelady Center—a home for women and children in Birmingham—will face a cut in SNAP funding from the government shutdown, losing more than $80,000 in monthly food aid that supports 600 residents. An anonymous couple pledged $50,000 to match donations for the center, which serves over 1,900 meals a day.  AL.com
  • The City of Birmingham and Jimmie Hale Mission will open warming stations on Sunday, Nov. 9 and Monday, Nov. 10 from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. as temperatures drop below freezing to offer food, shelter, and free shuttle rides; men, women, and children can visit the Mission at 3420 2nd Ave North while Pathways at 409 Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd will serve only women and children and is funded through a $20,000 Emergency Solutions Grant.  ABC 33/40

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Coca-Cola Holiday Caravan will visit Birmingham from November 19 to November 23 and offers free seasonal Coke products along with a chance to take a picture with Santa at 10 local stops. The stops include Lowe’s, Walmart, and Birmingham Zoo—giving families a fun way to start the holiday season.  Bham Now
