COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food pantries, churches, and nonprofits in Central Alabama will host Thanksgiving food giveaways over the coming weeks to help families and workers facing reduced income—WVTM 13 has compiled a list of local events.  WVTM 13
  • Alabama Stackers in Jasper is giving free grilled cheese kid’s meals to children starting November 1 due to SNAP delays amid a 36-day government shutdown (the effort has already fed about 20 kids and spurred local donations), and the program will continue until benefits resume.  Yellowhammer News
  • Birmingham has a busy weekend with a festive holiday market at BJCC, a tip-off game at Legacy Arena on Friday at 7PM, and a tree planting event at Norwood Park on Friday morning—other events include sports matches, live concerts, art shows and a book signing with Alan Gratz on Saturday. Most activities are free or low cost and give locals many ways to celebrate the season and support community causes.  Bham Now
  • The Junior League of Birmingham will hold Market Noel at the Finley Center in Hoover from Nov. 19 to Nov. 22, showcasing over 100 specialty vendors and festive activities designed to support local projects+ the event will include VIP shopping on Nov. 19, family fun on Nov. 20, and a brunch with Santa on Nov. 22 along with a book signing with Ivy Odom on Nov. 21.  Bham Now
  • A church in Bessemer will distribute 500 Thanksgiving Meals on November 15 to support local families—organizers say it will help those in need.  6 WBRC News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In October, the Jefferson County Department of Health gave 37 local restaurants scores of 95 or above—names like Green Acres Cafe, Dave’s Hot Chicken and Bruto met the food safety standards set during monthly inspections that covered over 100 establishments in the area.  Bham Now
  • Birmingham mother Cori Fain-Forrest waited nearly three years for a childcare spot for her son and then left her tech startup job to start Moxi—a membership-based childcare center that lets parents book care by the hour, day or week via an app. Her Homewood center opened in early November and she will soon launch a second downtown location with coworking and gym space.  6 WBRC News
  • Leafly Boba Bar introduced a new boba tea creation that is quickly catching on in Magic City—its unique flavor combinations and high-quality ingredients sparking local interest. The bar plans to expand its menu offerings soon—encouraging residents to try the innovative drink trend.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama State Department of Education launched Thank Alabama Teachers Month at Vestavia Hills Elementary Liberty Park today to honor teachers while highlighting a shortage that left over 1,300 positions unfilled and nearly 3,000 teachers on emergency certificates. State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey led the event—Governor Kay Ivey’s video message praised educators and introduced a new recruitment campaign.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Retired Sgt. Louie E. Smoke, the first Black deputy at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, died November 6—he served 34 years after being hired in 1968 and helped open doors for many. The sheriff’s office honored his legacy during Black History Month earlier this year.  The Birmingham Times
  • As temperatures drop, Birmingham Fire and Rescue urges residents to use space heaters safely, test smoke detectors monthly, and avoid leaving food unattended—residents can get free smoke detector installations by visiting their local fire station. Lt. Darryl Lane said proper heating practices and regular safety checks help prevent fires this fall and winter—homeowners are encouraged to act before the cold intensifies.  WVTM 13
  • On Thursday, November 6, Governor Ivey said Alabama submitted its Rural Health Transformation Program plan to Medicare and Medicaid Services — the plan includes 11 projects to help rural hospitals, clinics, and EMS services — and the state may share in a new federal fund if approved by year’s end.  Yellowhammer News
  • Alabama has approved a Mardi Gras license plate design created by a duo of a mother and a daughter from Saraland after a year-long review at the state legislative oversight committee — pre-orders began on November 1 and will need 1,000 sales by November 1 for the plates to be permanently issued. The design was painted by a local artist and will support the Birthplace of Mardi Gras Foundation for local parade groups.  6 WBRC News
  • ALDOT director John Cooper warned Bessemer data center developers that their Project Marvel plans clash with older designs for the Northern Beltline along I-459. The $14 billion project may bring more than 300 high-paying jobs and will be discussed at a public hearing on November 18 at 9 a.m.—officials asked for changes to keep the beltline plan on track.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB professor Ming He has received $5 million for two NIH-funded studies on atherosclerosis prevention and is examining how disturbed blood flow and high blood sugar damage artery cells — his first study runs through May 2030 and his second through August 2029. His work may lead to a better understanding of heart disease and offer new ways to halt artery damage.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
