- ➤ The city of Birmingham is hosting a food drive to support households affected by the loss of SNAP benefits—local residents can donate food at the Christian Service Mission, with items moving to neighborhood food banks. Donations are being accepted today from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. CBS 42
- ➤ Birmingham teen Ethan Hill, who has helped the homeless since he was 6, now needs community help after a tree crashed on his trailer and his truck broke down—threatening his nonprofit, Ethan’s Heart. He invites volunteers to join his seventh Annual Bags4Blessings Winter Homeless Survival Supply Packing Party on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Don Hawkins Recreation Center. WVTM 13
- ➤ The Jimmie Hale Mission and Pathways will open warming stations on Sunday and Monday evening in downtown Birmingham to offer up to 150 guests and 10 women and children a safe, warm meal, cots, and shelter when temperatures fall below freezing — the mission gets $75,000 from the city and needs more donations to cover expected costs. - ➤ Six turkey trots in Birmingham will take place before Thanksgiving with races scheduled for November 22 in Homewood and Hayden and on November 27 in Chelsea, Birmingham, Jasper, and Montclair. - ➤ Birmingham’s Alabama Fiber Festival will be held at Cahaba Brewing Co on November 14–15, offering over 50 vendors + 27 hands-on workshops along with live music, food trucks and even an alpaca on Saturday. - ➤ A nonprofit called The Flourish was awarded part of a $1.17 million grant from South Arts to support building a Black arts district and youth programs in Ensley (a historic Birmingham neighborhood). - ➤ UAB School of Nursing received a five-year $1.8 million grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research for its iHEAL training program—designed to recruit predoctoral and postdoctoral nurse scientists through hands-on learning, mentoring, and coursework.
