  • The Vestavia Hills Civic Center will host its annual Salute to Veterans Day Celebration on Veterans Day with a senior luncheon at noon (RSVP by Nov. 5) and a Health & Resources Fair from 1 to 5 p.m. Mayor Ashley Curry will lead a patriotic program at 2 p.m. featuring Commissioner Jeff Newton speaking (the event honors veterans).  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham business owner Charnita Horton celebrated her birthday on Tuesday by partnering with 12 food trucks—giving free food to government workers and SNAP recipients—and drawing over 300 people around the block. She also handed out $25 gift cards to ease costs—providing extra help while more than 700,000 locals await their next benefit payment amid the ongoing shutdown.  WVTM 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Drone footage from WVTM Sky 13 shows the aftermath of a large fire that started at 5:30 a.m. on Monday in Birmingham’s Five Points South, where a vacant building spread the flames to a nearby brick apartment and condominium, leaving three buildings damaged.  WVTM 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pink Lantern will open its doors on Saturday, November 8 at 7 a.m. as a coffee shop that switches to a cocktail bar at 4 p.m.—serving traditional Vietnamese coffee, local baked goods, and signature cocktails amid uniquely pink decor. Owners Clay Freeman and Danny Le spent the past year and a half creating the venue at 2400 1st Ave N—designed for daytime comfort and nighttime events.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • JP Morgan Chase announced a $2 million investment in the Capital Assets Collaborative to help small businesses grow in Alabama—VP Victoria Phipps said the move will support local economic opportunity. The funds are set to boost growth for many community enterprises.  CBS 42

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham City Council approved $1 million in emergency SNAP relief funding on Tuesday, Nov 4th—using city reserve funds to help about 23,000 households facing disruptions in their SNAP benefits. Eligible residents must show proof of SNAP, identity and residency to receive a debit card that works like their SNAP benefit card, with United Way of Central Alabama expected to distribute funds as early as next week.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, researchers at UAB are testing a protein made from bacteria that may lower cholesterol & improve overall health in zebrafish. Funded by the NIH and developed by Meridian Biotech, the team hopes the powder form of the protein can supplement traditional foods to help those in food deserts.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Fifteen Alabama restaurants have been included in the Michelin Guide’s American South list, bringing new recognition to local dining; the event in Greenville celebrated establishments from Birmingham, Mobile, Auburn, and Huntsville with distinctions such as Michelin stars and Bib Gourmand — a marker of good quality and value.
