  • Local officials at the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama said staff and volunteers are building 3,000 emergency food boxes to supply nearly 15,000 meals as SNAP delays leave more families seeking help—recently, the bank provided 18,000 meals to federal employees affected by the shutdown and relies on donations and volunteer support to meet growing demand.  6 WBRC News
  • The Hoover Public Library became a hub of generosity when community members donated enough non-perishable food to fill three rooms (responding to SNAP concerns amid a government shutdown). ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Birmingham firefighters battled a large fire early Friday near the 1300 block of 20th Street South near Cobb Lane that displaced 19 residents, though no injuries were reported, while the American Red Cross provided temporary shelter—ensuring residents' safety—and will assist with additional housing if needed.  AL.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Southern Company reported higher Q3 earnings with $1.7 billion earned—up from $1.5 billion last year—and $1.55 per share, while it earned $3.93 billion from January to September and saw Q3 operating revenues rise 7.5% to $7.8 billion with year-to-date revenues up 10.7% to $22.6 billion (CEO Chris Womack said its 28,000 employees remained focused on meeting growing electric demand for its 9 million customers).  ABC 33/40

  • Pell City High School dismissed a substitute teacher accused of offering a vape to students on Friday—Superintendent Justin Burns said the teacher was removed immediately, a police report was filed, and parents were notified.  WVTM 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Joe Pizarchik, the former head of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, warned that Alabama’s decision to suspend federally mandated methane monitoring after a fatal March 2024 mine explosion increases risks for residents living above coal mines. He said the suspension by Kathy Love may lead to more safety issues as the state moves ahead with major mining projects.  WBHM

  • The Bessemer Housing Authority will open its Section 8 wait list for the first time since 2016 from Nov 5 to Nov 7 to help low and moderate income families, seniors and people with disabilities secure stable housing — participants will pay about 30% of their income toward rent while the authority covers the remainder.
