COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Seasick Records in Birmingham will host a $1 sale from November 1-2 to raise funds for the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama by selling select 45s, CDs, and LPs. The store will also serve as a food donation drop-off during its normal hours—accepting items such as canned vegetables, meats, cereals, and paper goods.  CBS 42
  • Redemptive Cycles has moved to a larger facility in downtown Birmingham and will host a grand opening on Saturday, November 22 at 11 a.m. (906 1st Ave N) to celebrate with raffle drawings, a DJ, and exclusive offers while planning upgrades like a new HVAC system and improved lighting.  Bham Now
  • Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service held a homecoming service at Boutwell Auditorium on Oct. 29 where Firefighter Terry Sargent Jr.—who died on Oct. 19 at age 49—was honored for his service.  ABC 33/40

  • Edgar’s Bakery opened a new branch in Pelham (2824 Pelham Parkway in front of the Pelham Public Library) and serves cakes, cupcakes, baked goods and sandwiches from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  AL.com
  • Birmingham-based Protective Life Corporation announced plans to acquire Portfolio Holding, a national provider of reinsurance management services and F&I products for automotive dealers. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2025 — its 61st acquisition and a key step in the company’s growth strategy.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A Birmingham veteran who paid a grant consultant $4,100 to launch his nonprofit for teaching upholstery skills has filed a police report and is pursuing legal action after the consultant filed only incorporation papers but submitted no grant applications—leaving his plans in limbo.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Texas A&M Transportation Institute study showed that Birmingham commuters lost 57 hours in 2024 and about $1,404 each in lost productivity due to rising traffic congestion. The report compares these figures to previous years and suggests measures (like flexible work hours and ridesharing) to ease the delays.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The UAB National Alumni Society will host the 17th annual Uncork Education event at The Florentine on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 6-8 p.m.—the event supports student scholarships and will offer wine, beer, whiskey, spirit-free cocktails, and live and silent auctions with the live auction at 7 p.m. and a virtual silent auction opening Friday, Nov. 7 at 8 a.m.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Two ribbons were cut Monday, Oct. 20, as Legacy Prep Intermediate School opened in the former A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club at 2900 S. Park Drive SW. Local leaders and donors transformed the building into a state-of-the-art facility featuring a Den of Discovery with technology like green screens and 3D printing—this expansion will now serve grades four through eight.  The Birmingham Times
  • An Alabama Policy Institute report said the Alabama Education Association received $29.76 million from the National Education Association from 2015 to 2024, with NEA funds making up at least 15% of its annual revenue and supporting policies that conflict with state law. The report warns that these ties shape classroom teachings with divisive ideas—undermining the intent of SB129 that bans such concepts.  1819 News
  • Students at Spain Park High School's Engineering Academy built custom electric toy cars for children with disabilities using a Toshiba grant. The teams worked with children and therapists to modify each vehicle so that every child could ride independently+ the cars were provided free.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Birmingham announced a $1 million fund to help nearly 23,000 households that may lose their November SNAP benefits as the federal shutdown continues—local groups such as United Way and the Community Food Bank are coordinating food drives and resource services. Residents in need can access drop-off locations and call 211 for more help.  Bham Now
  • Birmingham Airport Authority is working with the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama to give food and essentials to federal workers at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport during the government shutdown—lunches have already been served for TSA, FAA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff, and more meals will be provided if the shutdown lasts.  WVTM 13

  • UAB Eye Care will host the annual Gift of Sight event from Dec 1-5 at Jefferson County Western Health Center in Midfield to provide free comprehensive eye exams and glasses for underserved patients — applicants must present proof of income or other qualifying documents.
