COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is changing a former Spark Hotel in Birmingham — once empty — into homes for 110 homeless veterans to offer long-term support and a path back into the community. Veterans who apply must be homeless and pass a background check, and they can stay for as long as needed.  WVTM 13
  • Community Kitchens in the basement of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Birmingham are preparing for more guests as tens of thousands in Jefferson County will lose food stamps next month—Executive Director Kimberly Speights said menus were trimmed and emergency funding is being sought to meet the expected demand.  WVTM 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Outback Steakhouse closed its downtown Birmingham and Inverness locations on Sunday, Oct. 26— the Inverness site had been open for 24 years— and said the decision was strictly a business move that allowed some employees to transfer and receive a bonus.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • From Nov. 12-16, Theatre UAB will stage 'A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder' at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center in five shows, with performances at 7:30 p.m. on most nights and a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 16. The Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of Monty Navarro’s rise to nobility in London through a mix of charm and mishaps — ticket prices range from $10 to $25.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The City of Birmingham allocated over $1.2M through its BOLD program—Building Opportunities for Lasting Development—to 12 local organizations to support small businesses, workforce development and creative placemaking. Mayor Randall L. Woodfin praised the funding as a key investment in local partnerships that will boost the city's economic landscape.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials from the Jefferson County Coroner—Medical Examiner’s Office are asking the public to help locate the family of Sean McLaughlin, a 64-year-old Birmingham resident who died from natural causes at his home on Oct. 18 at 11:23 a.m. during a welfare check requested by a concerned neighbor.  ABC 33/40
  • The Central Alabama Water Board hired three independent experts (Dr. Bruce, Engineer Campbell, and Engineer Sorrell) to review the Lake Purdy Dam rehabilitation project, part of a $28 million effort to strengthen the dam for safe water supply. They voted Wednesday night to include tests such as a dye test, drilling, and deep foundation work to ensure the dam meets quality standards.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham is investing $1.5 million in community programs to combat the opioid crisis—using national settlement funds to help groups like Alabama Appleseed Center, Lovelady Center, Cahaba Medical Care, Firehouse Ministries, and Auburn University expand treatment, prevention and outreach services. The funding supports efforts to reduce overdoses and aid recovery among residents.  6 WBRC News

  • UAB Optometry professor Safal Khanal is set to lead a $25 million NIH-funded five-year clinical trial called DONUT (Delaying the Onset of Nearsightedness Until Treatment) to test if nightly 0.05 percent atropine eye drops can delay myopia in high-risk children. UAB will enroll at least 45 children ages 6 to 11, with recruitment planned to begin in spring.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Chanda Temple, an award-winning Birmingham writer, profiles breast cancer survivors during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in her series 'SurviveHer at the Table: Food. Faith. Fight.' The survivors—who share personal treatment challenges, early detection lessons and favorite local foods—offer messages to help women trust their instincts and seek care early.  The Birmingham Times
