- ➤ Birmingham restaurant owner Thomas Hewitt is praying for his Jamaican siblings—four of whom he has yet to hear from—as Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm to hit the Caribbean, made landfall near New Hope on Tuesday. Hewitt, who moved from Jamaica in 2008 and runs Southern Caribbean Restaurant, said a family friend reported heavy winds and flooding in Manchester Parish. CBS 42

- ➤ Miles College will partner with Nvidia to integrate artificial intelligence in its academic programs, faculty research and community engagement at its Fairfield campus (near Birmingham). The company will provide resources, training tools and frameworks that will expand the college's AI curriculum and support regional innovation. The Birmingham Times

- ➤ The Alabama Grocers Association is urging Congress to end the government shutdown and secure SNAP and WIC benefits — these programs help many families get food. The group warns that cutting these benefits may cost the state billions — putting local grocery stores at risk. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin warned that one in four local households, nearly 23,000 families, may lose SNAP benefits starting November 1 as the Alabama Department of Human Resources suspends new allotments due to the government shutdown — the agency will continue processing applications so that benefits resume when federal funding returns.
