COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Magic City Classic Parade will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at 18th Street North and 7th Avenue North and travel through 19th Street, 6th Avenue and Richard Arrington Boulevard before ending at 16th Street North and 4th Avenue North. The city banned parking along the route after 11 p.m. Friday and will close roads at 2 a.m. Saturday—viewers can watch exclusively on WBRC 6 News at 8 a.m.  6 WBRC News
  • Jimmie Hale Mission will build a $4.5 million emergency shelter on 2nd Avenue North in Birmingham to help those in need—this facility will offer 98 beds, two family rooms, and access to social workers and health care, with funding from the city and fundraisers and construction set to begin next year.  WVTM 13
  • The Community Food Bank is preparing to serve local families and federal employees who face hunger as SNAP benefits will run out by the end of this month due to the government shutdown—resources have been cut, leaving fewer meals available. Officials say rising demand is forcing the food bank to plan a new initiative—organizing volunteer drives and additional food supplies—to support affected workers.  6 WBRC News

  • Hilton Birmingham Downtown at UAB has finished a big update that fixed all 295 guestrooms, built a new fitness center and meeting areas, plus opened Blazer’s Grill serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night bar snacks. The hotel now gives Hilton Honors bonus points for meeting planners plus more choices for guests near UAB Hospital and downtown.  Bham Now
  • A new steak and seafood restaurant named Lapeer Steak & Seafood will open in downtown Birmingham at The Hardwick, 2308 1st Ave S on November 5. The Georgia-based restaurant promises premium cuts—chef Blake Hartley will lead a menu featuring dry-aged beef and fresh seafood along with free lunch parking and complimentary valet for dinner.  Bham Now
  • SmartWiz, a Black-owned tax software firm founded in Birmingham in 2021, announced plans to create 66 high-paying jobs over the next five years while investing $125,000 in equipment at its Innovation Depot base—this expansion will boost the local tech ecosystem with support from state, county and city agencies including Alabama Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair. The project is set to strengthen Birmingham as a growing hub for innovation, drawing top talent and reinforcing the region’s commitment to advanced technology.  The Birmingham Times

CRIME NEWS

  • A shooting at a bonfire last weekend at 12:24 a.m. left 18-year-old Kimber Mills dead and injured Silas McCay, who needs another surgery, Levi Sanders in the ICU, and a 20-year-old woman, while doctors began organ donation and community members gathered at UAB Hospital for prayer — 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted murder.  1819 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Glow Wild will light up the Birmingham Zoo from Nov.22 to Jan.4 with its record-breaking lantern display, featuring the largest lantern in the event's history installed by Hanart. The celebration includes over one million lights, live entertainment, a mile-long lantern trail, and special nights like a Zoo Member Preview (Nov.21) and an Adult Night (Dec.4).  ABC 33/40
  • National Geographic named Birmingham a top travel destination among 10 U.S. industrial cities due to its rich history and greenspaces such as Sloss Furnaces and Vulcan Park. The magazine noted that nearly four million visitors came to the Birmingham metro area in 2023 and expects interest to continue growing.  Bham Now

  • UAB will host its Fall 2025 Expo from Dec. 1-5 where undergraduate students will showcase research and creative work. Abstracts are due Nov. 17 and students can attend in-person oral presentations at Sterne Library (8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Dec. 2) as well as poster sessions on Dec. 4, with the expo open to the public.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Jefferson State Community College will host a free career fair at its Jefferson Campus in Lurleen Wallace Hall, Room 300 at 2601 Carson Road in Birmingham on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon—job seekers and companies including UAB and Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook will connect about work opportunities.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate Agriculture Committee approved a bill sponsored by Sen. Tuberville to expand Talladega National Forest by about 50,000 acres across three counties. The bill lets the Forest Service buy land from willing sellers and will extend parts of the Pinhoti Trail — it aims to boost conservation and support local economies.  Yellowhammer News
