- ➤ Children’s Aid Society of Alabama is offering a free six-week EPIC parenting class that helps Birmingham families learn skills to build strong relationships & improve communication. The program covers topics such as child development and positive discipline for parents of children ages 0-18. Bham Now
- ➤ The Exceptional Foundation announced that the 2026 Chili Cook-Off is moving from Homewood’s Brookwood Village to The Urban Center at Liberty Park on March 7—where more than 100 teams will share chilis to raise funds for programs that support individuals with disabilities. - ➤ Birmingham will host the Woodfin’s Round-Up Harvest Festival on Oct. 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Short 20th Street in front of City Hall—this free event inspired by Toy Story will feature carnival rides, inflatables, games, food trucks and activities for children ages 2 to 12. ABC 33/40
- ➤ The Jimmie Hale Mission plans a new 98-bed, $4.4M homeless shelter at 3401 Second Ave North that will offer year-round services like showers, laundry and counseling—an effort to help people move out of homelessness amid tighter encampment rules in nearby suburbs. - ➤ Kimber Mills, a Cleveland High School senior, remains in critical condition after a weekend shooting that injured four people as community members held a prayer vigil at the school flagpole — 27 year old Steven Tyler Whitehead has been charged with murder and a fundraiser is planned at the football stadium to support her family. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A new report by The Commonwealth Fund says if Congress does not extend ACA tax credits, Alabama will lose 9,100 jobs in 2026 — 125,000 more people will be uninsured and federal funds and tax revenues will drop. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Gas prices in Birmingham dropped by 3.4 cents per gallon over the past week—averaging $2.69 per gallon—according to a GasBuddy survey of 550 stations. The study shows prices fell 8.1 cents since last month and 15 cents since last year, while the national average dropped to $2.98 per gallon. ABC 33/40

- ➤ Governor Kay Ivey introduced the Carbonell family from Birmingham who now benefit from the CHOOSE Act—an education savings account that helps cover school costs so children attend schools matching their family's values. Francisco and Itzel Carbonell, who moved here in 2021, have five children with four enrolled at St. Rose Academy and report that the program eased financial pressures while over 23,000 students statewide have received more than $124 million in savings. Their letter called for a 90-day notice before new tariffs and for measures to let Southern yellow pine chips reach EU buyers — steps meant to protect a $36 billion industry and save jobs. - ➤ Alabama health officials reported that 89 out of 449 infant deaths in 2023 were sleep-related SUIDs and urged families to join the #ClearTheCrib challenge this October to make cribs safer—removing pillows, loose blankets, and other dangerous items.
