  • Birmingham officially opened its first all-inclusive playground at Bessie Estell Park at 901 8th Street South this week. The accessible facility honors Braelynn by naming its entrance Braelynn’s Way after her mother’s request for a playground for disabled children—local groups will fundraise for Phase 2 improvements.  Bham Now

  • Revival has moved from its old 37th Street location to a new, larger space in the former MK Quinlan shop at 3900 Clairmont Ave S. The store, owned by Virginia Volman and Jonathan Lambert, held a grand opening on Oct. 16 + now offers antiques, vintage clothing, art, decor and design services to the Forest Park community.  Bham Now
  • Lee Edwards, president of Edwards Chevrolet, was nominated for the TIME Dealer of the Year award after nearly 40 years leading the family business in Birmingham—he will be honored at the National Automobile Dealers Association Show in Las Vegas on Feb 5 as a recognition of his community service and business innovation.  Yellowhammer News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Opera Birmingham will present the family-friendly musical adventure 'The Three Little Pigs' at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center on Nov. 2—starting with an ArtPlay event at 3 p.m. and followed by the opera at 4 p.m. as part of a Pay What You Choose series.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Sidewalk Cinema’s 2025 Halloween Film Series began on October 17 and continues through early November at its 1821 2nd Ave N venue, showing spooky films like Practical Magic, Little Shop of Horrors, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Scooby-Doo, The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, and Coco. The series also includes free Halloween events such as HOUSE OF WAX: Vinyl Happy Hour on October 17 and a Monster Bash on October 31 (with a costume contest, scary-oke, and special cocktails) available for in-person attendance.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • EDPA, the Alabama Department of Commerce and Innovate Alabama announced a statewide strategy called Alabama Puts Founders First to help tech companies grow and stay in the state. The plan uses corporate pilots, concierge support and data to target firms in sectors like defense and biotech — a move designed to boost startup success in the coming months.  Yellowhammer News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAB School of Nursing said it will add a summer 2026 cohort to admit 30 to 50 students—this will let them graduate sooner and help fill the local nurse shortage.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Three Birmingham schools have been named Apple Distinguished Schools for the 2025-2028 term—i3 Academy Elementary, i3 Academy Middle and Bush Hills STEAM Academy—as part of a program that honors innovative classroom use of Apple devices. The award recognizes their efforts to provide students with advanced learning tools.  Bham Now
  • On October 16, UAB unveiled a new state-of-the-art training room inside its Rehabilitation Pavilion on 7th Avenue South. The Merz Therapeutics Training Room—funded by a $130,000 grant from Merz Therapeutics—offers hands-on education for medical students, residents, and faculty.  Bham Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Taste of Sustainability is a walkable dinner event scheduled for October 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. in downtown Birmingham where four local restaurants offer tasting courses + a bonus zero-waste refill shop is available. Tickets cost $100, plus $52 from each ticket will support the Alabama Environmental Council and fund environmental programs.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham City Council approved a measure to spend $1M on upgrades at Legion Field—planned improvements include restroom expansion, wall repairs, and reroofing a maintenance shop before the stadium turns 100 in 2027. The historic venue will host 75 events this year, including college and high school football games, adult sports, and concerts.  Bham Now

  • The 84th Annual Amazon Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola will take place in Birmingham next week and is expected to draw 130,000 visitors for tailgate activities while 70,000 fans fill historic Legion Field. The event is projected to boost the local economy by $25 million — and ESPN’s First Take featuring Stephen A. Smith and Cam Newton will help kick off the celebrations.  6 WBRC News
