COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Six local nonprofits in Birmingham are helping people with disabilities gain skills and find meaningful jobs through job training—mentorship and work placements provided by organizations like Easterseals, United Ability, The Arc, and WE, Inc. United Way of Central Alabama supports these initiatives that equip individuals with hands-on experience and confidence for independence.  Bham Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Humidor Room, a popular cigar and scotch bar, is moving from Hoover to downtown Birmingham at 2115 7th Avenue South—signage is being installed at the new location while the opening date remains unannounced.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Moss Rock Festival will celebrate its 20th year on November 1-2 at Hoover Metropolitan Complex as it brings art exhibits, live music, food and kids’ workshops to the community. The event will feature over 100 exhibiting artists, a local beer garden and family-friendly activities — offering a unique fall weekend for residents.  Bham Now

  • UAB hosted its unique Gurney Derby on Wednesday at noon during homecoming when teams of four raced down a road and back pushing a passenger on a hospital gurney—prizes honored speed, best-dressed gurney, most creative passenger, and a Dead Last finish.  CBS 42
  • John David Noles, a senior at Southeastern School with a 3.94 GPA, was named this week’s Rising Star. He led his school’s marching band as captain and served as school ambassador for two years + was chosen as a Boys State City Representative and a Blount County Student Delegate in Washington, DC.  6 WBRC News
  • A 5-year-old girl mistakenly boarded a daycare van after leaving Huffman Academy on Wednesday evening and was safely reunited with her family after an hours-long search (officials are investigating the mix-up).  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lake Purdy Dam, a century-old structure serving Birmingham suburbs, has only $1 million in insurance coverage — an amount too low to replace even two average homes, and water board leaders are working to secure better coverage and repair the dam’s ongoing leaks.  AL.com
  • A renovation project at Legion Field will begin soon as local officials plan to update the facility—detailed plans and timelines are still being finalized. More information on the scope of upgrades is expected to be released in the coming weeks.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new Commonwealth Fund report shows that Medicare service in Alabama ranked 44th on a scorecard that measured access to care, quality, costs and population health. The report found nearly all older adults had routine checkups, yet high rates of inappropriate medication use and hospital admissions point to ongoing challenges in care—issues linked to economic vulnerability.  WBHM

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Barber Companies, a Birmingham investment firm, bought the former McGriff Seibels headquarters in Southside for $5.122M. The firm will put the site to market through retail ground lease or build-to-suit plans—covering an office, warehouse, flex building, and parking—while working with architects on updates.  Bham Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 84th annual Magic City Classic will be held on October 25 at Legion Field with a parade at 8:00 a.m., a tailgate from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and a game at 2:30 p.m. More than 60,000 fans are expected to join the event — it honors a long-standing HBCU tradition and is supported by over 200 Regions Bank volunteers.  Bham Now
  • UAB will honor more than 100 seriously ill children during its 9th annual Children’s Harbor game at Protective Stadium tomorrow by presenting each child with a game-worn jersey as part of a tradition started in 2016. The team’s players will also volunteer at the Children’s Harbor Family Center to build lasting connections with families — reinforcing the partnership’s promise of support.  6 WBRC News
