- ➤ A free celebration called Bound Together: Day of Community will be held Saturday at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to honor victims of lynching in Alabama—serving as the centerpiece of the Jefferson County Memorial Quilt initiative. - ➤ At a Hoover construction site on a Saturday morning, 11 young men from Birmingham learned trades under the guidance of nonprofit founder Terrence Ingram—helping them build skills for a brighter future. - ➤ Alabama is facing one of its driest seasons in years with most of the state in D-3 drought conditions, which has increased wildfire risks and forced farmers to rely on irrigation systems to manage fall crops—at Old Baker Farm in Shelby County, owner Leah Harry notes that a forecast of up to an inch of rain this weekend will not ease the drought enough to protect pumpkins and Christmas trees. - ➤ Birmingham has secured a $3.2 million grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation — the money will help start a road safety project on Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd S that will lower the road from four lanes to three and add a path for pedestrians and cyclists. - ➤ Birmingham residents packed Parker High School’s auditorium Wednesday night to demand better measures against stray animals—like mandatory spay and neuter, microchipping and pet registration—as dangerous encounters with roving dogs grow.
