COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Irondale city leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday morning for the new public library on Grants Mill Road—marking the first city-owned building opening in over 52 years. The celebration featured live music and book signings by special guest authors.  WVTM 13
  • United Way of Central Alabama is inviting locals—no accounting experience needed—to volunteer in its free tax preparation VITA program. New tax volunteer sessions will be held virtually on Oct. 21 from 10:30 a.m. to noon and in-person on Oct. 30 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.  ABC 33/40
  • Black Lives Matter Grassroots and its Birmingham Chapter honored three young scholars with scholarships for their work fighting unfair systems at an awards event held on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute—recognizing Tamira Thompkins, Marcus Smith, and William LeBron Peoples.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 30,000 fans filled Protective Stadium Saturday night to see Chris Brown perform his sold-out Breezy Bowl concert. The BJCC added extra parking options to fix past issues—helping fans wait hours early for food and parking.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 400 education advocates, school leaders, teachers, students and parents will meet on Friday, Oct. 17 at Red Mountain Theater to explore new ideas for education in Alabama. The Alabama Opportunity Summit, co-hosted by A+ Education Partnership and Teach For America Alabama, will feature a Caroline Novak Champion for Children Award ceremony at 8:30 a.m. and talks by experts including Miguel Solis and Dr. Sean Reardon.  ABC 33/40
  • John Carroll Catholic High School unveiled new athletic facilities today to boost its sports programs and give students a better space for practices—school officials said plans for using the area will be shared soon.  6 WBRC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alabama Audubon is working to make windows in Central Alabama bird safe with its Project Safe Flight by tracking collisions and advising building owners to use bird-safe glass—volunteers help monitor migration routes during spring and fall.  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Grandview Health celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Friday, Oct. 10 with a ceremony that honored its growth in women’s care, cardiology, and emergency services for local residents. Special guests included Meghan Whitney—its first baby born at the hospital—and the event showcased over $131 million in investments and many new jobs over the past decade.  ABC 33/40
  • On Friday, Oct. 10, Grandview Health celebrated its 10th anniversary by marking a decade of growth in healthcare services—including expansions in women's care, cardiology and the emergency department—in Birmingham — the event honored special guest Meghan Whitney, the first baby born at the hospital, and her mother Tracy who helped during the move in 2015.  ABC 33/40

  • No. 8 Alabama will face No. 14 Missouri on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in a college football game where Alabama, with a 6 to 2 record against the Tigers, will try to slow Missouri's top rusher Ahmad Hardy and win the turnover battle for a crucial road victory.  1819 News
  • Mark Womack, a longtime SEC leader from Alabama, died on Monday at age 70 & helped grow the conference after joining in 1978. He played a key role in launching the SEC Football Championship Game in 1992 & was honored by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2023 while he is survived by his wife and son.  ABC 33/40
