COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vulcan Park and Museum in Birmingham celebrated the installation of a national registry marker at the base of the Vulcan statue—marking a nearly 50-year journey that began in 1976 when the museum secured paperwork, with grant efforts starting last year to install the marker.  WVTM 13
  • Huffman Middle School opened a free grocery store for students' families this week, using funds ($277,500) from the American Rescue Plan Act for a two-year pilot program. Families must register online to shop during the school year for items like fresh produce, eggs, and bread.  AL.com

  • Ghost Train Brewing Co. teased on social media that its popular craft beers will soon return on taps across Alabama — the exact locations have not been announced.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Magic City Fashion Week has announced its season six theme 'Lift Off' which will focus on local talent, sustainability, and southern creativity + the event will include an Emerging Designer Showcase on Oct. 17 and pop-up activations, an up-cycle workshop and a panel discussion on Oct. 18 at The Pizitz.  Bham Now
  • Glow Wild will return to Birmingham Zoo on November 22 — the event will run until January 4 and will feature a mile-long walk lit by over one million lights, live entertainment, and seasonal treats — as some animals may be kept indoors if the weather calls for it.  6 WBRC News
  • Lisa Loeb and Joan Osborne will perform on Nov. 13 at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center in the Jemison Concert Hall starting at 7 p.m.—UAB students and staff can get discounted tickets. The event promises a night of music from two iconic voices in American music.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham has expanded the RESTORE program to help kids ages 11 to 15 in the juvenile system—adding to services already offered to those ages 16 to 19 by the Jefferson County Family Resource Center and funded by a DOJ grant. The change is meant to keep children from getting into long-term trouble with the law.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA began its annual rabies prevention campaign in Alabama on Oct. 10 by spreading the RABORAL V-RG vaccine to wildlife across several counties; in the Birmingham metro area, 31,320 baits were distributed by truck (toll-free: 1-877-722-6725) and residents are advised to leave the baits undisturbed to protect public safety.  ABC 33/40
  • Children's of Alabama doctors have seen more kids hurt in car crashes because many are not buckled up — over 10,000 children under 13 needed emergency care in the last two years. Ashley Bridgmon from the Safety Center said a quick two-second click to fasten seatbelts can make the difference between minor hurts and serious injuries.  ABC 33/40

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A study by Coventry Direct found that over seven percent of homes in Birmingham were inherited, tying with Pittsburgh for the highest rate among 34 major metro areas—about one in 14 homeowners received a home as a gift. The analysis showed that New Orleans had a 4.51 percent rate while the national average was under four percent.  AL.com

  • The Savannah Bananas unveiled the 2026 Banana Ball schedule and will bring the event back to Rickwood Field after its 2023 run—two games are set for Sept. 19-20 between the Loco Beach Coconuts and Indianapolis Clowns.  Bham Now
