COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Birmingham will celebrate the opening of its first all-inclusive playground at Bessie Estell Park on Friday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m.—a space where children of all abilities can play together.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham now has an in-school grocery shop at Huffman Middle that gives enrolled families free groceries to fight food insecurity — the 300-square-foot store is funded with ARPA money and run by Goodr as a two-year pilot that school officials will review to see if it improves student learning.  ABC 33/40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A small fire broke out in a second-floor apartment at Kenley Apartments near Highway 280 and Cahaba Beach Road when improperly discarded smoking materials started the blaze—firefighters quickly opened the wall and put it out without any injuries.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Over a fall weekend, thousands in Birmingham celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness, Hispanic Heritage Month and the 15th anniversary of Railroad Park with live music and family activities. Events held on Sept. 27 and Sept. 28 featured diverse food festivals plus local cultural performances that brought the community together.  The Birmingham Times
  • The Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir returned to Birmingham after reaching the semifinals on America's Got Talent and earning a Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell—bringing fresh event requests and a planned single release this month—while the group expressed gratitude for America's support. They now prepare to build on their success with new opportunities ahead.  WVTM 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Downtown Birmingham Economic Vitality Report showed that the BJCC attracted 787,100 visits in the first half of 2025 while other sites trailed behind—City Walk BHAM nearly doubled its visitors from the previous year. CEO Tad Snider said the venue’s strong turnout helped fuel downtown momentum.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama State Board of Education is meeting today to discuss funding, curriculum updates including new arts and social studies textbooks, and safety plans that will endorse School Bus Safety Week (Oct. 20-24) while recognizing Dyslexia Awareness Month. The board will review the Fiscal Year 2027 Foundation Program Appropriation Request and consider changes to teacher pay and resource allocation as it honors outstanding educators.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Birmingham Police Department will host a Career Expo and Physical Agility Screening on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex as part of its Journey to 100% employment initiative for recruiting new officers. The event offers a $10,000 sign-on bonus + an opportunity for applicants and community members to learn about law enforcement careers.  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Victor Sung, M.D.—director of UAB’s Huntington’s Disease Clinic—said a new treatment called AMT-130 slowed Huntington’s disease by 75 percent in a trial of 29 early-stage patients, including seven from UAB, with the therapy given during an eight-to-10-hour surgery. uniQure will ask the FDA for fast approval so this treatment can become the first option to change the course of the rare disease.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Today at Children's of Alabama, Spiderman, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman rappelled down the side of the hospital to start Superhero Month — a celebration of strength, courage and resilience. The hospital will hold more events during October — including a superhero glow party.  ABC 33/40
