  • On Saturday, the 5th Annual Yo Amo Irondale Festival was held at Irondale City Hall to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with live broadcasts by La Jefa Alabama Radio, music and dance performances, and food trucks offering free meals for the first 50 visitors. The free event also featured family activities—like mechanical bull rides, train rides, bounce houses and face painting—while Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. praised the festival for honoring the city’s diverse heritage.  ABC 33/40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Shelby County officials are investigating a drowning at Oak Mountain State Park that occurred Sunday afternoon — details will be released as the investigation continues.  6 WBRC News

  • The Birmingham Airport Authority will host a job fair at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport on Tuesday, October 7 from 9 a.m. to Noon—job seekers must bring two forms of identification and extra resume copies as companies plan to fill roles in retail, food and beverage, operations, public safety, and skilled trades near Door 4U.  The Birmingham Times
  • King's Home has opened a new thrift store in Birmingham that offers quality secondhand goods at affordable prices; the store aims to support local residents with a wide range of items.  6 WBRC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • WBRC’s Josh Gauntt was named 2025 Television Journalist of the Year by Troy University’s Hall School of Journalism and Communication (an award recognizing his dedication and impact) and he received the honor during the 50th anniversary celebration of TrojanVision (a milestone for the on-campus station). He has been with WBRC since 2013 and his two Emmy nominations highlight his strong career in journalism.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham’s Sidewalk Cinema is hosting a Halloween film series—running from Oct. 17-30—that offers films including Practical Magic, Little Shop of Horrors and Killer Klowns from Outer Space from Oct. 17-23 and Scooby Doo, The Addams Family and Addams Family Values from Oct. 24-30. Each film will have multiple showings—giving local viewers more options to attend.  CBS 42

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jefferson County residents looking to reenter the workforce will attend a free second chance hiring fair at Boutwell Auditorium—employers like the City of Birmingham, Hyatt Regency, and Alabama Power will be present.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Central Alabama Water will begin a water main tie-in and valve installation tomorrow at the end of Feldspar Way at 5 p.m., and the work—lasting about two to four hours—will disrupt water service for the Finley Center and RV Park, leaving no drinking water or fire protection during the maintenance.  ABC 33/40
  • Bessemer city council is set to review the rezoning request for the contentious Project Marvel data center on Tuesday, Oct. 7 — the 700-acre development on Rock Mountain Lake Road could create over 300 high-paying jobs but has raised strong community concerns over utility costs and environmental risks. Residents have voiced worries over noise and light pollution that may disrupt their daily lives.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham voters will cast ballots tomorrow, October 7, in runoff elections for City Council and the Board of Education where candidates in District 4, District 9, and for a vacant District 8 seat will compete and polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The Birmingham Times
  • BJCC is asking Birmingham residents to donate memorabilia such as tickets, photos, and programs for Legacy Arena’s 50th anniversary—items will be accepted until Dec. 31.  ABC 33/40
  • Organizations including the Alabama Rivers Alliance held an event at Lil Mama's Event Center today to discuss the environmental and economic impacts of a proposed 700-acre data center in the Rock Mountain Lakes community. Policy director Charles Miller warned that the project may increase power bills, cause geologic changes and harm local springs, and the city council will vote on it Tuesday, Oct 7.  ABC 33/40

  • Alabama moved up two spots to number 8 in the AP Top 25 after beating Vanderbilt on Saturday while nine SEC teams are now in the rankings today. Penn State dropped out after losing to UCLA and Texas fell out after a loss to Florida+ the shifts mark an unpredictable start to the season.  6 WBRC News
  • During the post-race party of the Alabama Race Series BHM 26.2 Marathon in Hoover last Sunday, four-year-old Jackson received a trip to Disney World from Magic Moments—Mayor Frank Brocato shared his joy on Facebook. The race, which drew over 2,000 runners and serves as a Boston Marathon qualifier, supported children with serious health conditions.  ABC 33/40
