- ➤ The Birmingham Zoo will host its Hoots and Howls event to bring families together for animal talks and interactive displays—officials said more details will be announced soon. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ The Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Birmingham Zoo are partnering for a special event on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—made possible by the Linn-Henley Charitable Trust, the event will offer live animal-inspired music along with interactive activities like face painting and an instrument petting zoo. - ➤ On Sunday, October 19, the Highland Park Neighborhood Association will host its 2nd annual porch crawl featuring live music, light refreshments, and a historical scavenger hunt across local venues in Highland Park. Visitors should begin with a scavenger card at the Birmingham Historical Society — a recommended starting point — and then explore stops such as Clubhouse on Highland as the event runs from 3PM to 5PM with live music at Rojo from 5 to 6:30PM. - ➤ Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will host a job fair on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Event Room on the upper terminal near Door 4U—job seekers can explore roles in federal, retail and law enforcement fields. Attendees should bring two forms of ID, several copies of their resume and dress professionally for on-site interviews and possible same-day offers. ABC 33/40

- ➤ UAB will host Homecoming Week from Oct. 12 to Oct. 18 with events including the Gurney Derby on Oct. 15, wheelchair flag football on Oct. 14, the Homecoming Parade on Oct. 17, and the Battle for the Bones BBQ competition on Oct. 18—UAB Football will play Memphis on Oct. 18 with tickets priced from $22 to $55 and free student options. - ➤ Samford University earned three top-10 rankings in The Wall Street Journal's 2026 Best Colleges report—ranking #3 in career preparation, #5 most recommended and #7 in student learning opportunities based on education data and student surveys. - ➤ The Alabama Forestry Commission issued a statewide Fire Danger Advisory because drought, high temperatures, and low humidity have raised wildfire risks. The advisory will remain in effect until sufficient rainfall improves conditions — officials may add burn bans if the dry weather continues. Yellowhammer News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pelham City Council will read an ordinance amendment on Monday that will streamline the business license code for use beginning in the 2026 business license year—this change will remove old language and modernize the process with a formal vote set for Oct. 20. Leaders will also consider a budget amendment to fund police equipment from a Fiscal Year 2025 surplus not exceeding $106,337—while discussing proposed updates to the Pelham Sports Complex at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6. - ➤ Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the Kennedy v. Louisiana ruling that removed the death penalty for child rape, saying the decision weakens the state’s ability to deter predators. Marshall and 20 other state attorneys general have formed a coalition (aiming to restore capital punishment laws) to better protect children from severe harm. Yellowhammer News
