COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Ability’s Early Intervention program helps young children with disabilities reach new milestones with home-based and classroom therapy sessions. The program serves 430 families per month using 26 therapists—benefiting kids in Jefferson, Shelby and Etowah counties.  Bham Now
  • A New York nonprofit Tunnels to Towers Foundation is starting its Veterans Village program in Birmingham—110 affordable housing units with full-time support will be built on a former hotel property off Highway 280—and will break ground Oct. 29. The project will offer veterans long-term housing without time limits on their stay.  6 WBRC News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pack Health, a Quest Diagnostics company, will close its Birmingham facility on November 28 — affecting nearly 100 workers — and has not given a reason for the shutdown after expanding two years ago.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 50 local music shows are scheduled in Birmingham this October — including an event today at The Nick at 8 p.m. and shows at Elysian Gardens with tickets starting as low as $4.60. The live performances will feature many music genres and promise a lively month for local fans.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Black Women’s Mental Health Institute has launched the Mental Health Career Navigation Fellowship to help Alabama high school juniors and seniors learn about mental health care amid a clinician shortage—students will attend 12 workshops over eight months and host a community event to earn a $500 academic award.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Central Alabama Community Food Bank in Birmingham is preparing to meet rising demand as the government shutdown halts federal programs like SNAP and WIC—forcing more residents to rely on local food aid. CEO Nicole Williams said the food bank, which feeds over 100,000 people each month, will accept donations and serve those in need until lawmakers restore services.  WVTM 13
  • Gov. Kay Ivey signed a proclamation on September 18 at Sweet Creek Farms in Pike Road (the Governor’s Office reported) to declare October as Farm to School Month in Alabama, which will see schools host special events and hands-on activities connecting students with local farmers and fresh foods. Schools will hold classroom sessions, farm field trips, and garden projects throughout October to support local agriculture.  ABC 33/40
  • Homewood City Council postponed its vote on a proposed ordinance regulating camping on public property after a unanimous committee recommendation failed to pass at Monday's meeting—residents and council members remain divided on permit requirements and related penalties. The council will revisit the ordinance on Oct. 13 to further address community concerns.  ABC 33/40
  • Months of construction on Old Springville Road in northeast Jefferson County have frustrated local drivers with longer detours during the holiday season. The $5 million project funded by ARPA faces utility and weather delays, and the detour lasts (late November) with full completion set for (February 2026).  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tracy McCall, a three-time breast cancer survivor from Birmingham and a certified medical assistant at UAB Hospital in hematology & oncology, served as the ambassador for the BBBB Sistah Strut on September 27 and now uses her experience to promote early detection during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Her personal battles since 2004 have driven her commitment to helping low-income and minority communities access proper care.  The Birmingham Times
