CRIME NEWS

  • Jefferson County leaders and One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center will present on domestic violence awareness today following four homicides in September, including Denise Tolbert’s murder-suicide on Sept 24—highlighting domestic violence as a public health crisis—while raising funds to support survivors.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham launched a $20M workforce plan that will create 1,500 jobs and guide local investments over the next four years. The Reinvest Birmingham strategy was announced during a meeting with 30 partners and is supported by a federal $20.2M grant—focusing on sectors like construction, manufacturing, childcare and healthcare.  ABC 33/40
  • The City of Birmingham—together with the Community Funding Accelerator—met with 30 partners from education, workforce training, transportation, and childcare to release a Workforce Strategy that will use $20.2 million from an EDA grant to drive the Reinvest Birmingham initiative. The plan will host job fairs and career sessions for 5,000 residents in North Birmingham, Northside, Pratt, and Smithfield and is expected to create 1,500 new jobs.  The Birmingham Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuesday night, the Bessemer Board of Education met for its first regular session in months and approved a five-year capital plan that will build a new elementary school, install a grand master keying system, and update safety features—projects expected to finish by 2030. Superintendent Michael Turner said recent board training helped guide focused questions and essential renovations across the district.  ABC 33/40
  • Tiffany White, a 23-year-old Birmingham native who grew up in foster care and dropped out of high school, has been elected Miss Freshman 2025-2026 at Miles College and is now leading a program called PLACE—an effort focused on purpose, leadership, advocacy, community, and education. She earned her GED after her daughter’s graduation and plans to attend law school to work in criminal and juvenile defense.  The Birmingham Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A family in the Spring Lake subdivision said they called 911 on Monday when Gene Florence had chest pains but were told no ambulance was available due to the area's lack of local fire protection—repeat calls failed to secure emergency help. Florence and 95-year-old Eula Ingram, who waited over three hours for assistance after collapsing, are now planning to meet with their homeowners association to explore solutions for better emergency coverage.  6 WBRC News
  • Hoover mayor-elect Nick Derzis, a former police chief, aims to restore the city's strength by increasing transparency—he will boost economic development through new business projects and improved communication with the city council. He will be officially sworn in in November and is already working on proposals for the 2026 budget, including major funding for public safety and city infrastructure.  AL.com
  • The Center Point Fire District announced new emergency vehicles last Tuesday — Engine 5 and Rescue 15 will serve the Clay-Chalkville area at Station 5 on Chalkville Mountain Road while Service 31 will respond to structure fires and large-scale incidents.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham City Council approved nearly $10 million for new surveillance tools to improve traffic safety at train crossings and monitor crime as the system links directly to the Real Time Crime Center (pilot program in Council Pro Tem Wardine Alexander's district). Officials said the technology, including license plate recognition cameras, solar panels, and video monitors at four crossings, will be funded with federal dollars and may expand if the pilot proves successful (federal funding).  WVTM 13
  • Vestavia Hills received a federal grant to improve Altadena Valley Park (formerly an old golf course now used as a green space) by adding 2,800 linear feet of asphalt walkways, repairing a bridge, and updating signage. The city must match 20% of the grant and will plan to include a veterans memorial though construction has not yet been scheduled.  WVTM 13
  • At a Homewood City Council meeting, Councilwoman Melanie Greer voted no and delayed a public safety ordinance—meant to guide police to give warnings before arrests for actions like sleeping in cars or parks—until the next meeting on October 13. The delay comes after community concerns grew from rising encounters with homeless individuals and strained local services.  1819 News
  • The Bessemer Board of Education approved a five-year capital plan Tuesday night to add $90,000 for hiring teachers and improve facilities at middle and high schools. Superintendent Michael Turner said the plan is a flexible guideline—deviations may occur as the district meets changing needs.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama lawmakers and physicians celebrated the enactment of a new maternal healthcare law — known as presumptive Medicaid eligibility — that takes effect today. The law allows Medicaid to cover outpatient care for low-income pregnant women for up to 60 days while their applications are processed and is in effect through Oct. 1, 2028.  ABC 33/40
