CULTURE NEWS

  • Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema will host its 16th Annual $10K Party on Friday, November 14 at WorkPlay—500 23rd St S, where guests will play bingo, enjoy free beer and wine, and have a chance to win a $10,000 grand prize. Only 300 tickets are available and the fundraiser supports a film festival that brings world-class cinema to Birmingham.  Bham Now
  • Trinity Anderson, a UAB theatre student from Birmingham, will star as Akeelah in ‘Akeelah and The Bee — The Play’ at the Carver Theatre from October 2 to 4 at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and she earned the role through cold read auditions that show her passion for perseverance and growth.  The Birmingham Times
  • UAB Department of Music will present its fall performance calendar featuring recitals and concerts by students, alumni, faculty and guest artists at venues including the Hulsey Recital Hall and Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center—most events are free. The schedule will include a student recital on Oct. 1, a Wind Symphony concert on Oct. 7, chamber music on Oct. 14, and a Christmas performance on Dec. 1.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • The Blazer Bridge Fund announced nine winners for innovative projects at UAB. The projects include a new antibody for cancer and a web-based AI coaching app—selected from 41 applications across four schools.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Paul Finebaum is considering a run for the Alabama U.S. Senate seat after political figures reached out to him—he said his long career speaking with Alabamians has drawn him to the idea. He recently moved back to Alabama with his wife, and candidates must qualify by January 23, 2026 with the general election scheduled for November 3, 2026.  CBS 42
  • After more than a month in ICE detention at a Louisiana facility, immigration advocate Giovanna Hernandez-Martinez from Birmingham self-deported to live with family in Mexico City—her brother said her departure was due to insufficient medical care. Her family is expecting her to land today as she plans to find a legal way to re-enter the U.S.  AL.com
  • Gov. Ivey announced a $137,509 grant through the federal Recreational Trails Program to fund improvements that will turn part of a former country club golf course in Vestavia Hills into a city park. The funds will build 2,850 feet of asphalt trail, repair a 70-foot bridge and install lighting and signage — with the city adding $34,377 in local funds.  ABC 33/40

  • After a win against Georgia, Alabama coach DeBoer said his team must stay focused as they prepare to play Vanderbilt this Saturday. He stressed that improved ball security and fewer penalties will help the team handle mounting injuries — including an extended recovery for Quay — and urged every player to step up.  WVTM 13
