- ➤ Fiesta, Alabama's largest celebration of Hispanic culture, returned for its 23rd annual event Saturday in Birmingham. - ➤ Governor Kay Ivey launched the 'Alabama Favorites' series to encourage residents and visitors to explore local destinations this fall. The series highlights Gee’s Bend, which will host its Airing of the Quilts Festival on October 4, Gulf Shores preparing for the National Shrimp Festival from October 9—12, scenic Lake Jordan, and Monroeville where visitors can tour the historic courthouse and mark Harper Lee’s legacy with a posthumous book release on October 21. - ➤ USPS Operation Santa—now in its 113th year—started accepting letters on Sept. 23 and will accept postmarked letters until Dec. 6 for holiday wish fulfillment. - ➤ The Birmingham VA held a Memorial Ruck today in Tuskegee—part of the military appreciation weekend—to honor veterans. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ Hoover’s new mayor-elect Nick Derzis said a study presented to the City Council on Monday night proposed redeveloping Riverchase Galleria by replacing two big box retail modules with 542 apartments, 44,000 square feet of retail space, greenspace, and a performing arts center to boost economic growth. He added the study focused only on part of the property and noted a broader vision that includes nearby Patton Creek and Costco will be needed — a critical step to reimagining the 39-year-old center.
