CULTURE NEWS

  • Alabama's largest Hispanic celebration will be held tomorrow at Linn Park in Birmingham. The free Fiesta BHAM—offering food, music, dancing, and art—will run from noon to 8 p.m. at 710 20th Street North.  WVTM 13
  • Southbound Food Festival in Birmingham will wrap up this weekend with Food & Fire on Sept. 27, a daytime tasting event that celebrates barbecue, live-fire cooking & tailgate culture with regional and national chefs. The ten-day festival will end with a brunch on Sept. 28 featuring live music, a craft beer & wine garden & community activities.  The Birmingham Times
  • Ian Rashaud, a wardrobe stylist and minister, started Faith and Fashion to help young Black men dress well and be taken seriously—he learned his passion for style from family and everyday experience.  The Birmingham Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Birmingham City Schools announced earlier this month that it is launching a district-wide sensory training program in partnership with KultureCity to help educators support students with sensory challenges. The training will equip staff with tools such as noise-cancelling headphones + fidget tools and include specialized sensory rooms + prepared assistance to better serve students with autism and other sensitivities.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Birmingham will host an informational session at Boutwell Auditorium on September 30 for food truck operators & food tent vendors to learn legal requirements and the new permitting process. The meeting will start at 4 p.m. and include a Q&A with revenue examiners available until 7 p.m.  ABC 33/40
  • The BJCTA has partnered with Equal Access Birmingham to launch an initiative that will use a donation of 750 busses from MAX Transit to help uninsured, underinsured, and unhoused patients reach essential healthcare services—officials said the program will provide reliable transit for those facing transportation insecurity.  6 WBRC News
  • The Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama, University of Alabama, Women Under Construction and Jefferson County District Attorney—Bessemer Cutoff Division launch the Safeguard Initiative to help reduce domestic violence by educating residents and offering resources to victims. Classes begin on September 29th with two sessions at 10:00 a.m. and one at 6:00 p.m.—grant funds from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will support the program.  CBS 42
  • Birmingham Fire Department showcased BRINC’s Drone as First Responder technology—drones that autonomously launch from a dock station and stream live video to an operator—as officials evaluate its potential to cut response times and improve safety. The system could help clear up to 50% of calls without dispatching a responder.  ABC 33/40

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UAB Blazers football team honored 101 Smile-A-Mile patients battling childhood cancer by gifting them game-worn jerseys with each patient’s name during the Akron game on Sept. 13, and the jerseys were later handed out at Smile-A-Mile in Birmingham—families shared in a special moment of connection. The team will repeat the gesture on Oct. 18th during the Children's Harbor game.  WVTM 13
  • The Birmingham Barons won their second consecutive Southern League championship when they defeated the Montgomery Biscuits 6—3 in the final game of the series in Montgomery on Thursday afternoon. They won games two and three after losing game one to secure the title.  6 WBRC News
