  • Habaneros Mexican Grill reopened on September 21 at its new Hoover spot in the Centre at Riverchase development on Montgomery Highway across from Hoover City Hall.   • Homewood police arrested a man for indecent exposure near Edgewood after residents raised alarm at a public safety meeting over a nude creek bather and growing homelessness concerns—issues that are now part of the City Council runoff debate.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rudolf Martino from Birmingham was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest natural beard locks on a living person—measuring 3.5 feet and still growing after more than 10 years; he said his careful daily routine shows his unique style and commitment.  WVTM 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two local students detailed how the Birmingham Promise helped them gain education and career opportunities—Angel Pine used the scholarship to pursue a communications career while Torey Kelly followed a path in computer science. The program, funded by public and private support, connects students with local businesses to provide paid internships and college tuition assistance.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In the Hoover City Council runoff, newcomer Ashley Lovell defeated Liz Lane for Place 3 with 6,351 votes while former councilman Gene Smith won Place 2 with 4,644 votes over Cox. Lovell, who organized Tattersall residents against zoning changes, and Smith—both supported by ALGOP—join other winners including Robin Schultz and unopposed incumbents.  1819 News
  • Birmingham City Council approved $2.5 million for BJCTA’s on-demand transit program— the funding will go to the private company VIA as part of the city’s 7030 plan to improve service in areas with few bus routes and to track ride data for future federal support.  CBS 42
  • On Sept. 23, several Alabama cities held runoff elections where Tarrant and Lipscomb elected new mayors and Hoover filled key council seats amid calls for another financial audit—Birmingham voters will cast ballots in the metro runoff on Oct. 7.  AL.com
  • In the runoff for Homewood City Council Ward 3, Chris Lane defeated John Manzelli with 749 votes to 688—he ran his campaign to improve public safety and restore trust in the community.  1819 News
  • Multiple foreclosure and quiet title actions have been set by the Birmingham Land Bank Authority with final hearings scheduled for November 3 at Jefferson County Courthouse—legal notices in the Birmingham Times warn parties with property interests, in areas including Druid Hills and North Highlands, to respond or risk losing their rights.  The Birmingham Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ruben Vuittonet Jr, a UAB patient, used origami to help him recover from a stroke in 2019 and to create art for the new Inpatient Rehabilitation Pavilion at Spain Rehabilitation Center.   • At today’s Hoover City Council meeting, Hunden Partners unveiled a $240M phased plan to redevelop Riverchase Galleria — the proposal calls for demolishing parts of the mall and building apartments, retail space, an arts center, and greenspace; if implemented, it is expected to generate $396M in net new spending over 10 years.  Bham Now
