  • Alabama McDonald’s customers rounded up their orders to donate over $1.1 million to help local families stay at Ronald McDonald House while children like two-year-old S.J. Gowen await care at Children’s of Alabama. RMHC will host a Day of Change & Gratitude event on Oct. 17—showing strong community support.  Bham Now
  • Church founder Chris Hodges returned to the pulpit on Sunday, Sept 14 to preach after Charlie Kirk’s murder on Sept 10—he said his heart and prayers were with Kirk’s family in a moment of reflection following past social media controversy over his support of Kirk.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Candace Kemp — whose daughter Anitra Holloman was killed in a mass shooting last year — still holds unopened funeral cards and an uncashed insurance check as painful reminders. She is raising her grandbaby and launched the Anita’s Light Foundation to help children who lost a parent to gun violence as the one-year anniversary nears tomorrow.  6 WBRC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Window Movie, LLC is working on a new movie that will start filming in mid-October and is looking for a large mansion or estate in Birmingham with a classical style and a long driveway + well-kept grounds. The film crew will film for five full days and will pay rental fees while covering insurance and scheduling details.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAB was named to the prestigious Honor Roll in the Great Colleges to Work For program—earning national recognition for its strong workplace culture. More than 5,000 employees joined a survey that rated the university in six key areas such as job satisfaction, benefits, and shared governance.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Birmingham Promise received a $1M grant from The CAFE Group on Sept. 18 to back scholarships and internships for Birmingham City Schools students — executive director Samantha Williams is one of five honoring the 1954 Project Luminary Award. The grant builds on the nonprofit's efforts since 2020 to provide tuition assistance to local graduates.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jefferson County attorneys filed a motion to pause a judge’s order that requires new commission district maps because they say the ruling did not show race was the main factor in the 2021 redistricting. They asked for a decision by next Wednesday—this will give the county time to finish the maps by Oct. 20 so that candidates can meet the residency rules before the May election.  AL.com
  • A new bill filed by Rep. Reed Ingram would require all Alabama school boards to have students recite the Pledge of Allegiance every day or face a funding cut of 25%—the measure also allows schools to opt for a voluntary prayer and Bible reading session before class, and it will be considered when lawmakers reconvene on January 13. The bill would amend the state constitution and could lead to further funding reductions if schools do not comply.  CBS 42
  • The Alabama Department of Transportation is planning major maintenance on the I-20 westbound bridge over the Coosa River in Riverside. Motorists should expect a single-lane closure for up to seven days in early October — details on timelines and alternate routes will follow one week before the closure begins — to help plan their travel.  ABC 33/40

  • The Calera Police Department and Shelby County Probate Judge Allison Boyd partnered with the county's mental health officer program to de-escalate crises in Calera. Mental Health Officer Zach Andrews helped a resident get needed medical help earlier this week—showing the program's success.  ABC 33/40
  • Magnolia Ridge, a 148-bed nursing home in Gardendale, closed after failing three inspections by the Alabama Department of Public Health — its certification was revoked, leading to bankruptcy, staff layoffs and the relocation of over 110 residents.  1819 News
