COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Railroad Park in Birmingham is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a free community event on September 28 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.—featuring live music and food trucks. The event includes a kids zone, lawn games and a 3 p.m. neighborhood celebration to honor local officers.  ABC 33/40

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Solidcore will open its first Alabama studio at The Summit in Birmingham this fall at 333 Summit Blvd, where the fitness chain will offer a 50-minute resistance training workout in blue neon lights and intense music. The company is expanding to more than 150 studios nationwide and serves over 200,000 clients each month.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Birmingham Youth Fellowship Choir — directed by Ahkeem Lee — has advanced to the semifinals of America's Got Talent and is rehearsing in California for Tuesday's performance. The choir practices six hours daily to mix secular and gospel music and represent Birmingham.  WVTM 13
  • The Iron Hills Country Music Festival will be held at Sloss Furnaces on October 11 and October 12—Birmingham's first country music festival will feature major country stars and up-and-coming artists. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bush Hills STEAM Academy and seven other Birmingham schools are using a new hydroponic farm to help students learn to grow fresh vegetables and fight food deserts. The program is a partnership among Jones Valley Teaching Farm—New York Sun Works—and the city that will produce up to 4,000 pounds of produce each year for the local community.  The Birmingham Times
  • The Hoover Board of Education approved a $247 million general fund budget for 2026—5.5% higher than the 2025 figure, with about $162.8 million set aside for employee salaries. The budget also allocates $26.1 million for capital projects to update school facilities including heating, roofing, and gym improvements.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham Police Department is filling 72 vacancies under its Journey to 100% initiative and is now 91% staffed—Chief Michael Pickett said it will be fully staffed by November.  ABC 33/40
  • Beth Chapman devoted decades to public service as Alabama’s 51st Secretary of State—she was elected three times and led efforts to improve government transparency and efficiency for citizens and businesses. Today, she directs her own government relations firm and continues to support policy initiatives that benefit the state.  Yellowhammer News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Birmingham VA Medical Center received a five-star rating from CMS based on mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care—staff improvements were credited with boosting these scores. The hospital said its focused measures had made a clear difference for veterans.  6 WBRC News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity and the Northeast YMCA in Roebuck have launched a project to build 22 affordable homes as part of a neighborhood redevelopment. Future homeowners will build sweat equity and receive key support services — including a pediatric clinic and counseling — to help secure long-term success.  AL.com
