Retired Marine Sgt. Kenneth Means has been cleaning a veterans’ gravesite at Shadowlawn Memorial Park for weeks to honor his wife’s uncle and other veterans buried in this historic cemetery.
Means hopes that local groups and leaders soon join his effort to preserve Birmingham’s largest African-American cemetery.

Samuel P. Martin (publisher of The Birmingham Times) said he learned he had prostate cancer over five years ago after a routine physical led to follow-up tests.
He said careful monitoring and treatment choices have helped him manage the disease and urged local men to get regularly screened.
Walmart is recalling four products including a frozen berry blend sold in Alabama due to E. coli, a toy with small balls, squishy bun toys with water beads, and cleaners that may cause illness.
The recalls were issued by the FDA + CPSC, and no injuries have been reported yet.
A UAB researcher is testing an AI framework to better predict cancer treatment responses by analyzing clinical trial data & genetic profiles.
He is working with national groups to standardize models and guide personalized therapies for patients.
