- ➤ Andrea Whitfield was inducted on August 10 at the Montgomery Marriott in Prattville into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for her lifelong work in education and community service — the 71-year-old retired educator and celebrated author is the only African American among the ten honorees — and she continues to inspire future generations. - ➤ Birmingham City Council approved a 24-month deferral on a $3.2 million HUD loan for the Pizitz Food Hall — a historic downtown property facing low foot traffic and financial challenges — as the owner plans to rebrand and attract new tenants. ABC 33/40
- ➤ A Birmingham restaurant —Bayonet— made the New York Times America's Best Restaurant 2025 list for its raw oyster bar and rotating sustainable fish menu. The restaurant on —2nd Avenue North— opened six months ago and is led by Chef Rob McDaniel and his wife Emily. WVTM 13
- ➤ Valley Post, a new dining and entertainment complex, is rapidly taking shape at the northwest corner of Highway 280 and Dunnavant Valley Road in Chelsea as it replaces the old Treetop Family Adventure site—developers from Capstone Real Estate Development and Pihakis Restaurant Group plan four restaurants with indoor dining and outdoor patios that will open later this year. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Birmingham theaters will start a busy 2025-2026 season with over 35 shows at local venues, including new musicals, dramas and comedies. Many plays will feature groups like Red Mountain Theatre, Terrific New Theatre and Virginia Samford Theatre — tickets will go on sale soon. Bham Now
- ➤ The Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir advanced to the semifinals on America’s Got Talent after their quarterfinal performance of Praise You and When I Think About Jesus impressed the judges+ overnight votes confirmed their spot. - ➤ Eight Birmingham schools will use new hydroponic systems in their classrooms to produce up to 4,000 pounds of fresh produce each year. The program gives nearly 4,000 students hands-on learning—helping them grow nutritious food—and aims to improve access in local food deserts. AL.com

- ➤ Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell on Tuesday criticized his opponent Katherine Robertson for accepting large out-of-state donations while running for attorney general in 2026 — he noted that 71% of her August funds came from outside donors including dark money groups and a Florida billionaire. Robertson defended her record and said support from groups like First Principles Action proves she is ready to lead from Day 1. 1819 News
