COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KultureCity will unveil its first Sensory Pod on September 11 at 11:30 a.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex, which will serve as a quiet space for those with sensory sensitivities—designed by the local nonprofit dedicated to inclusion.  Bham Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nine new businesses opened in Birmingham this week while two popular spots closed as the local scene shifts. The new places include a bubble tea shop in Tattersall Park and a chicken joint in Gardendale — Blueroot will rebrand as The Mustard Club this fall while Oversoul Brewing will close at the end of September.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police arrested 41 people during the week of September 1 to 7, 2025—27 for felony charges and 14 for misdemeanors, while officers also seized 14 firearms, impounded 12 vehicles, and collected drugs and currency.  ABC 33/40
  • On Monday, the mother of Jabari Peoples, an 18-year-old shot by Homewood police, appeared in Jefferson County Court with her attorney to request that Judge Elizabeth French preserve a four-minute video that began during the struggle—an act aimed at preventing any tampering before a potential lawsuit is filed.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir will perform tonight at 7 p.m. on America's Got Talent after their Golden Buzzer moment in July—public voting began at 7 a.m. today and results will be announced on September 10.  The Birmingham Times
  • K. Reshay Williams will host Behind the Ink — one of Alabama's largest book festivals — on Sept. 13 at The Harbert Center in Birmingham, where New York Times best-selling author Kennedy Ryan will headline. The free event will feature panel discussions, vendors and line dancing, and over 1700 attendees have already registered.  The Birmingham Times
  • The Trans-Siberian Orchestra will perform their 2025 holiday show at Legacy Arena on December 10 as part of their Winter Tour, featuring a 25th-anniversary tribute to Beethoven's Last Night. Tickets will go on sale (September 12 at 10 a.m.) and a portion of the proceeds (helping the Breast Cancer Research Foundation) will be donated to charity.  ABC 33/40

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham has over 11,000 job openings available in healthcare, tech and retail according to local labor reports. Employers like UAB Medicine and Baptist Health are hiring with openings ranging from 16 to 200 — offering many opportunities for job seekers.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama Public Television cut 15% of its staff, laying off 11 workers from its production and education teams after losing $2.8 million in federal funding—federal cuts approved in July. The changes will take effect Sept. 30, just before the new fiscal year starts.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB St. Vincent’s performed a treatment that uses soundwaves to break up hardened blockages in leg arteries for patients with severe peripheral artery disease—Dr. Christopher DeGroat said the procedure is safer than older methods and may lower the need for amputations. Specialists stress that a healthy lifestyle can help prevent the disease.  CBS 42
