- ➤ Hoover held its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony to honor nearly 3000 lives lost on 9/11—community members climbed 110 flights of stairs at Riverchase Galleria to pay their tribute. ABC 33/40
- ➤ The American Village will display 139 American flags at the National Veterans Shrine to honor Alabama veterans who died by suicide in 2023 + the tribute is part of the Operation We Remember campaign and will run from Sept 12 through Oct 13, marking the Navy's 250th birthday celebration. - ➤ The University of Alabama at Birmingham set a new record when 2,500 freshmen began classes last month—a 25% increase from last year. President Ray L. Watts said the growth shows the quality of UAB's faculty and opportunities, and final enrollment data will be available in October. AL.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin won his third term last week by getting nearly 75% of the votes across all 64 precincts—his strongest support came at the Crestway Baptist Church precinct in southeast Birmingham. Voter turnout was only 22% citywide as his campaign received backing from many parts of the city. AL.com
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ WellStone is offering a free SGB nerve-block injection — a treatment that eases PTSD symptoms — to Alabama veterans and first responders, with eligible patients screened in Cullman before scheduling treatment at a Birmingham clinic. The program began in Cullman in 2021 with local VFW leaders and lawmakers and has shown an average 60% symptom reduction in follow-up visits. Yellowhammer News
