CRIME NEWS

  • Quenton Christian Washington, 20, was arrested on capital murder and attempted murder charges after he is accused of killing Quindarius Allen and injuring another person in a Smithfield neighborhood shooting on Aug. 12—another suspect had already been charged in the case.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham neighbors were shocked when an 82-year-old woman was fatally shot — police are investigating the case.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett—speaking at a Thursday morning news conference—asked local residents to come forward with any information to help locate the person who killed an 82-year-old woman on Wednesday night.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A gathering at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute honored civil rights activists who helped pass the Voting Rights Act while warning that new voting policies may limit access—Doris Maddox, who protested when she was 22, kept mementos of past struggles and urged the community to keep fighting for these rights.  WVTM 13
  • Attorney Edward Still—who fought for voting rights for over 50 years and argued in more than 200 cases—died Sept. 1 at 79. His work changed voting laws and helped increase Black representation in local government.  AL.com
