ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tiara Latrice Shantell Jordan, a 31-year-old Birmingham driver, was killed in a head-on crash in the 3300 block of Grants Mill Road at 7:27 a.m. and was taken to UAB Hospital where she died at 9:34 a.m.—Birmingham police are investigating the incident.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police arrested 76 people from August 25 to 31 as part of a week-long crackdown that saw the seizure of 22 guns and various drugs during 123 traffic stops—aimed at cutting crime and keeping the community safe.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Broadway musical Wicked arrived in Birmingham today at the BJCC Concert Hall — 100 local volunteers helped 25 touring employees unload and set up the stage. The show will run for three weeks — 24 performances are scheduled during its engagement.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham City Council approved $170,000 on Tuesday morning for a new STEM exhibit at McWane Science Center—part of the 'Dropping Science' project that will offer free learning for Birmingham City Schools—and the exhibit is scheduled to open before year end.  The Birmingham Times
  • Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin granted a full and unconditional pardon to Duane Flowers, who was convicted in 1996 for third-degree domestic violence, after the victim Sofia Smitherman expressed her support during a City Council meeting. The pardon does not erase his record but restores his rights—an uncommon decision under Alabama law.  ABC 33/40
