CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham activist Mercutio Southall, 40, was charged with first-degree arson and criminal mischief after allegedly leaving a protest for Jabari Peoples' death and filling a Walmart shopping cart — with rags, blankets, charcoal bags, fuel, and paint thinner — before setting it on fire in the store, which caused a mass evacuation and over $130,000 in damages, and he is now held without bond at Jefferson County Jail.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAB expects its largest freshman class for fall as early figures show nearly a 25 percent increase — adding about 500 first time students through its SUCCESS Initiative. New campus facilities such as Gorrie Hall and the revamped Student Assembly Building will boost student opportunities.  The Birmingham Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hoover City Council election set five of seven seats with four incumbents returning and two races moving to a runoff. Runoff elections will be held on September 23 as voters await the final results.  1819 News
  • Alabama shoppers face lower sales taxes at the register starting today as groceries drop from 3% to 2% and a three-year exemption removes a 4% tax from baby, maternity and menstrual products—changes building on over $1.5 billion in past tax cuts. Local governments may adjust their own rates, but no changes will occur unless they vote to reduce them.  Yellowhammer News
