- ➤ The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is asking for help finding two men suspected of breaking into a Center Point home on the 2100 block of 5th Way NW on August 6 — they allegedly stole items from inside. ABC 33/40
- ➤ A Birmingham man, Robert Mitchell, 41, was shot near a Central Pratt residence Friday night and later died at UAB Hospital—police have not made an arrest. CBS 42
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Governor Kay Ivey and state lawmakers have criticized the AHSAA ruling that forces CHOOSE Act students to sit out a year from school sports—lawmakers say the rule violates the law and plan to push for a change. The criticism comes as the school choice program begins its first year this fall. 1819 News
- ➤ UAB in Birmingham expects its largest freshman class ever this fall as early estimates show nearly a 25% increase with about 500 more first-time full-time students than last year—official counts will be confirmed in October. ABC 33/40

- ➤ Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin won his third term on Aug. 26 by raising nearly $1.6 million in campaign funds and securing more than 80% of the total dollars among eight opponents—supporters from Birmingham and beyond helped boost his victory with contributions from nearly 3,000 donors. - ➤ The National Institutes of Health renewed a five-year $5.75 million grant for UAB’s Nathan Shock Center—one of eight centers focused on aging research nationwide. Co-directors Austad and Buford said the funding will help develop treatments to slow chronic diseases—an effort aimed at boosting preventive care. Yellowhammer News
