COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Birmingham is set to host 16 varied events this Labor Day weekend (August 29 to 31) that include baseball games, concerts, art workshops, fun runs, and more, with detailed schedules, costs, and special promotions for local fans. CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police arrested four parents Thursday after a fight between Hays Middle School students at Tom Brown Housing Community — the suspects were charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, with one also facing Child Endangerment, and were taken to Birmingham City Jail.  CBS 42
  • Birmingham police and Crime Stoppers are asking for help solving two robberies from July 2025—one on the 2400 block of Brookhaven Avenue when three armed men took phones and cash from workers on July 23, and another on the 300 block of Gamma Street when five armed juveniles robbed a worker and one suspect struck his face on July 25.  6 WBRC News

  • Birmingham chef Kristen Farmer Hall will host a French style farm to table feast at Wilsonville’s Lovelight Farm on September 28th at 3PM — co-hosted by farmer Jennifer Askew.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi have formed MAGNET—a tri-state partnership that brings together the University of Alabama, University of Georgia and Mississippi State with support from state governors and power companies to boost auto and battery manufacturing in the Southeast. The initiative will be led from the University of Alabama and is a contender for federal innovation funds.  Yellowhammer News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Birmingham City Schools has expanded its Early College Program to Wenonah High School—partnering with Lawson State Community College, the program now enrolls 15 juniors and 10 sophomores while allowing freshmen to join next semester. The free program aims for students to earn 30 credits before graduating.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama is appealing a federal ruling that struck down part of its State Senate map and has asked the court to pause its order until the Supreme Court reviews a redistricting case from Louisiana on October 15. Election officials plan to have a new Senate map ready by November 17 to avoid disruption during the May 19 primary — lawmakers are also considering meeting in late September or early October to design the new plan.  Yellowhammer News

  • UAB held off Alabama State in a high scoring season opener at Protective Stadium Thursday night, winning 52—42. The Blazers controlled the clock with strong runs by Jevon Jackson and Solomon Beebe—key plays that set them up to face Navy next week.  6 WBRC News
