CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham Police are investigating a motorcycle crash that killed a 34-year-old man when his motorcycle collided + with a vehicle on Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd North near 44th Place North on Aug. 23 at 10:58 p.m.  6 WBRC News
  • Adrian Sikweya Nyaberi, 20, has been charged with capital murder for killing Huffman High junior George Camarius Daniel, 16, on Saturday on Huffman Road — he also faces an attempted murder charge for wounding another teen.  AL.com
  • A 35-year-old man identified as Samy Alberta Estrada-Flores was fatally shot on the 4300 block of Pinson Valley Parkway in Birmingham early Friday morning and died at 12:23 a.m. on August 22 while police investigate his death as a homicide.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ahkeem Lee, a mentor at UAB, leads a 10-year-old community choir that earned a Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent in July and will perform live on Sept. 9—10. The group, which rehearses twice weekly at 16th Street Baptist Church, gained viral fame after a '90s-themed concert spurred over 500,000 YouTube views and 3 million on Instagram.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • City clerks in the Birmingham area remind voters to check updated polling locations and bring an Alabama state-issued ID before casting their ballots today — polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.  CBS 42
  • Concerns about voter turnout are rising as municipal elections approach on August 26, with past participation at Hoover 11%, Alabaster 13%, Helena 15%, and Birmingham 19%. Local experts and residents stress that voting in local elections—where every vote can greatly influence community decisions—is key to change.  ABC 33/40

  • A child under 5 contracted measles—the first case in Alabama in over 20 years—after traveling outside the US, and the Alabama Department of Public Health said the unvaccinated child caught the virus.  CBS 42
