COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and Hollywood Feed hosted the Clear the Shelters event where many dogs and cats found their forever homes for a $10 adoption fee — the campaign continues through the end of the month as shelters lower fees to help more pets find homes.  WVTM 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A missing youth was found safe near Cahaba Park Church on Saturday night at 11:25 p.m.—rescue teams from Cahaba Valley Fire District and Vestavia Hills Fire Department located the youth after a search and reunited them with their family without need for medical care.  CBS 42

CRIME NEWS

  • One person sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting near Kappa Avenue/2nd Avenue S. in Birmingham Saturday night at 9:07 p.m.—authorities have not taken anyone into custody.  6 WBRC News
  • Argo Police Department is investigating a possible road rage shooting that occurred Saturday night on I-59 near the Shell gas station by Jack’s—no one was injured.  CBS 42
  • A driver was arrested in Calera after police responded to calls of a vehicle driving without headlights that hit a pole and a gas pump on Highway 31 — he refused field sobriety tests and now faces charges including DUI and eluding arrest.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin—facing eight challengers—will run for re-election on Tuesday, August 26 with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters will also elect City Council and Board of Education members, and if no candidate earns over 50.1 percent of the vote, a runoff will be held on October 7.  The Birmingham Times
  • Birmingham voters will cast ballots in City Council races on Tuesday, August 26, including a tight District 8 contest with nine candidates set to replace incumbent Carol Clarke and a District 3 race with two candidates to replace Valerie Abbott—any race that does not reach the 50.1 percent vote threshold will lead to a runoff on October 7.  The Birmingham Times
  • On Friday morning, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office recognized 10 new deputies in Fultondale. One of the new deputies, Xander Stewart, who follows his uncle’s footsteps, will begin his shift at Birmingham Jail on Saturday — a move aimed at strengthening family ties within the force.  WVTM 13

  • During Friday night's high school football game in Sylacauga, referee Lew Murphy performed CPR twice on fellow official Joey Shellnut after he collapsed on the field, and WBRC is still working to get an update on his condition.  6 WBRC News
